No, just standard turbo diesel behaviour. The couple of rev-ups put some heat into the combustion chamber after which there's enough power available to move the vehicle. Cold diesel engines don't work very well.
I'm not sure what it is maybe some of you guys have come across it?
I've noticed that sometimes the car 'won't go' ie you put your foot down and nothing happens, the car just won't rev. It happens every time I park at my parents place as the car is on a steep incline, as I go to reverse out it won't move and the engine won't rev, if I put it into neutral it'll rev fine. That's how I get going again after its had a big rev out of gear it will reverse up the hill.
Any ideas?
Cheers.

similar but different - going forward up a slope is easy, about 1000rpm, in reverse I need about 2000rpm just to hold the slope, and 2500 to drive up the slope.
its a 2000 td5 auto (182000km), and it makes no difference if its hot or cold. Does this come under the heading of normal behavior? cos its annoying when I have to reverse a trailer up a long driveway & it feels like its really over-revving & screaming its guts out all the way
Assuming its an auto:
Possibly low transmission fluid level.
How long since it had a tramsmission fluid and filter change?
To Alex110; Not a direct answer, but I'd recommend reversing that trailer uphill in Low Range

reverse gear is a different ratio so it will always rev more. i have to reverse most things into my dads place and he has a fair hill so we just use low range for the larger trailers making the disco work easier
Correct disco97, Rev gear ratio is 2.086:1 and 1st gear ratio is 2.48:1. It would be like trying to take off in second gear in a manual car, you would have to slip the clutch more just to get going. hence it gives the impretion of more revs.
I think he means differing revs in fwd and rev just to get moving rather than actual once you get travelling revs - and mine does the same thing. The difference in ratios is not that great, so I would have to assume either our autos are suspect or its a feature built into the box. I've done about 160K, not much of which has been in reverse - certaily less than presumably many more first gear starts (although of course there is only 1 reverse gear, so I suppose the thing to compare with is holding it in first).
