Interesting or strange issue?? Siren noise, drivers side rear

    Hi all,

I have noticed lately, that there is a distinct faint (and sometimes not so faint) siren type noise coming from the rear drivers side (rear quarter panel). It can be heard both inside and outside of the vehicle, and occurs in no particular pattern, whilst driving, whilst ideling, and even without the vehicle running (no key inside, and vehicle locked).

The siren noise lasts usually around 3-5 seconds, and I don't know what the prompt is for it to occur, as it's random. Nor do I know if this is an issue as such, or the beginning of one that has yet to occur.

Has anyone heard anything like this before, or have any clues as to what it 'might' be??

    Thanks in advance.

    Got kids?
Sounds like someone's left you a soundbite to confuse you
    Other than that...
    Engine off?
    Sounds odd...

Yep, got kids. It's definitely not a toy or similar.

Yep, the noise will still occur engine off and Disco locked.

And yep, it is definitely very odd.

How about a fuel pressure buildup escaping thru the filler cap or somewhere in the filler hose behind it. Could happen when motor is on and off and might make a whistle/ siren type sound.

Yeah, could be... To me it sounds more 'electrical' though.

It sounds disctinctly like a footy siren or similar, obviously not as loud though.

I might pop the filler door and leave it ajar for a while, and when I hear the noise, listen closely to the cap and see. Out of interest, the cap doesn't quite feel like it seals completely tight either.

    Thanks for the input/suggestion.

Just a thought, do you have SLS & airbags? Intermittant air leak? Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

    Yeah, I do Bob.

No issues with the bags, have checked them recently. The sound seems to be coming from inside the body though.

Another question for those still following: Is there a fuel pump or anything around this area from where I'm hearing the noise?? And if so, would I still hear the noise, car off, if it was a problem with the fuel pump??

Td5's have a fuel filter there. Not sure about the V8s.
When you say it does it with the engine off, is that right after shut off or what?
AFAIK fuel pumps don't make siren sounds, they shriek like a banshee with a stubbed toe.

I'm going with the fuel pressure build up in the tank and venting. I had a similar problem on the D1. I would park it in the garage and a strange tone would sound out. As soon as I opened the cap a burst of pressure came out.

I can't remember what I did now. I replaced the cap for one and checked all the pipes. My return fuel line was blocked but can't remember if that contributed to that or my starting problems.

When it happens release the cap and see if there is any pressure build up.
    Cheers, David.
