toss the head bolts and use studs--
Hi all,
I managed to overheat my D2 (my own fault) 20,000k or so ago and I knew I was probably going to be looking at head gaskets (at least) down the track because of it. I am now down the track at 200,000k. Motor stripped down and bores and liners are excellent. Block is holding pressure. Heads excellent with no signs of valve seat regression etc and crack tested and cam looks good. So...heads cleaned, new inserts and and some port matching going on, Crow cam of the torque/towing variety (unless I go their wilder one, but that would seem silly if the original heads are used) with new lifters and off with the older single point lambda controlled converter and a BRC Impco sequential vapour injection going on while the valley is off and its all nice and accessible.
I am excited! Looking forward to doing a report on the beast. Power and torque on LPG should be very good, with economy at l/100k at about the same as petrol.
The LPG/rover specialist says the rover motors are excellent at running LPG with no wear problems at all. Suits me. Given the accessories have been replaced on mine recently - water pump, radiator, alternator, fan coupling etc etc, I am looking at another 200,000k trouble free...
Cheers
PS. Thanks to Beeutey for his guidance with choosing an LPG system

I hear you Pedro and I read that elsewhere. Interestingly TRS were not hot on the idea. I will look into it further. It seems to me likely that if my block has not cracked using head bolts to 200,000 then a new set shouldn't. Cheers
Fitting studs to assemble an engine out of the bay is one thing but has anyone actually fitted them to a block in the engine bay and then fitted the heads?
Cheers
Not necessary. Just put the head on using two new studs/old bolts temporarily, then install the studs one by one in the vehicle (they have allen key holes in the top). I tried lifting a head off an engine with studs fitted and ended up removing nearly all the studs anyway. Easy peasy. Remember the studs aren't tight in the block.
