G'day folks,
I have a question about how best to store td5 injectors while the head is off getting checked.
Most pics I've come across have the injectors just lined up on the bench but I thought I recalled someone saying they should be stored upright. Any truth to this, or is it just my imagination?
Thanks in advance, and thanks Psimpson7 for your excellent pics on how to remove the head. I was a Ford mechanic for 10 years and the td5 head is similar to remove to the 200 or so Falcon heads I've pulled. This td5 of ours is my first diesel experience, and I'm keen not to damage the injectors especially when I've seen how much they cost!
Cheers
Dave

I understood that it was very important to leave the lifters vertical but figured that the injectors would be OK if kept clean
I drill a large hole in a plank of wood and stuff some pvc pipe into that then stick the injectors in the pvc pipe.
If its going to be there for a while I cover the injectors with clean rags, a sheet of thick cardboard then put a bit of ply over the top and tie wire it all together.

The injectors can be layed down without issue. I just put them in a cardboard box in order and covered them with a rag on the ones I have done.
Thanks for the replies.
Injectors are now safely laying down on the bench with two layers of rags over them. Head is in the boot of a Camry I've borrowed, and I'm about to have a late night snack. Blueberry pudding!
It runs!
Got the head back Tuesday, put it on last night, got it running tonight. Its a 9/02 D2a with 185,000km and it did have plastic dowels.
I have thoroughly enjoyed myself, good to pick up the tools once more. I actually still have most of the Kinchrome tool set I bought as a first year apprentice in 1986!
The only hiccup is that I dropped the AC compressor onto the boost control switch thingy and broke the top tube off it. Oh well, that's just another $150 or so to add to the 2.5k I've spent in parts! On top of the head gaskets and bolts, the machining and valve grind cost I've bought an EGR bypass, MAF, silicon hoses, radiator, thermostat, engine saver and all oils for a complete service.
Should see me right for a few years to come! I'm planning to keep it at least until it hits 300,000.
