Quick Question on V8 Engine Oil

My service invoice says 5W/40 Synthetic. So is this what i need to keep in the garage at home for top ups etc? Can only find it in 1litre in the shops, all other viscosity seems to be in 5% litres! I guess i would be in trouble topping up 5 litres ! but seems cost effective to have more ..

You want to find out which brand .

5W 40 synthetic is probably overkill for an RV8 which was designed in the 60s.
If the dealer will not tell you the specific oil, you can put in any synthetic 5W40, 10W40 , or 15w40, or any semi synthetic 10/40 or 15/40 ( or even "dino" oil 15W40) but the service interval should be shortened.

I change my V8 oil every 5-7KK anyway as these engines get very gunged up inside with long oil change intervals. Mine is still a nice light tan inside at 220Kk.

Thanks, yes I have mine done every 6 months. Always by time as I do very little K's. The garage uses 'Nulon 5w/40 Fully Synthetic'. I bought today "Caltex Own Brand 5W/40 Fully Synthetic to top ups if needed"

What do you mean by "overkill" ? No need to go for such good stuff etc?..

Yes, they are very lightly stressed and you can use even cheaper fossil oil with regular changes and they will last 300-400KK.

There is is even some who believe that it is detrimental to use full synthetic as they generally have less ZPP? ( zinc based stuff to stop scuffing of the cam) . I use Valvoline semi synth 10/40 or 15/40 as I have a foot in both camps and it is reputed to have more zinc stuff.. LOL

I have used Penrite in my vehicles for over 15 years. My d2 runs hpr10 and just been opened at 200,000 and is clean as I whistle with the cam lobes also looking good and my d1 with 280,000 runs like a dream on hpr 30.

    Cheers

I've run several RV8s on Valvoline 10W40 but latterly I've tended to use Castrol.
