    Airbags Vs Coils?

    Hi Guys, Great Forum. I am thinking about purchasing a D2 and would like to know whether Airbags or coils would give a softer ride. I currently have an 80 series with a 4in lift and think its time to have a bit more comfort. We don`t go extreme 4wding, mainly beaches and a little towing... cheers

    IMHO..

    the airbags are a touch more supple but the springs are more reliable.

    Given what you're coming from either's a fine choice if you're prepared for the differences in the marques and maintenance techniques.

    Get the air bags, much more comfortable and if they fail, easier to fix than broken springs.( approximately 30 to 45 minute change for both airbags).

    X2 airbags and you can also drop the car to get under trailer tow hitches ( with the suspension plip) or raise it for off road work.

    I've personally assisted with broken down SLS equiped D2's on two occasions since I've owned a D2 (11 years) and have read of plenty more field failures.

    I've never heard of a spring failing in the field (although I'm sure others may) and would think that this would be very rare.

    Personally, I have the spring model but must admit the airbags sound tempting (if they were more reliable). I went with using softer springs for ride comfort and inserted airbags inside the springs for load control and am pretty happy with this setup.

    As much as I was tempted to get and SLS model in 2005, I'm happy with having stuck with coil suspension.

    All going to plan I hopefully will be removing my airbags tomorrow in favour of springs. Good ride but dont like them!

    Just so you can get the WDH for your caravan.

    I'd sort the van and tow bar tongue/goose neck arrangement.

    Air bags are great and in a 9 year old car I replaced the bags approx 2-3 years ago. One bag had a slow leak, not a catastrophic failure as the air pump more than kept up with the leak when it did occur. I just found that on a couple of mornings one side had gone down overnight. Drove like that for a few weeks until I ordered replacement bags from o/s.

    I don't like them Pedro and its not just this TD5, I did'nt like them on the previous TD5 I had either. I'm a big fan of airbag (polyairs) but not these sls ones. They ride ok but I don't like the level look on a 4by prefer bum up a bit, Cant use WDH with them and I don't like towing without it, However unlikely it may be I don't like the fact if it goes, your on the bump stop, I reckon springs are a more reliable option IMO. Just not a big fan of SLS!
    Slug Burner I will sorting the hitch & van too. I will be doing an axle undersling on the van as the undercarriege is just sitting too low. I cant even get the bloody wheel off unless its jacked by the chassis and not the suspension. Problem I have which I found when I blew the tyre on the van is if its (as it was) the LHF on the van it has a reccessed step so you can't even get the jack in a spot thats suitable to remove that wheel, Hard to explain here but its a bugger of a thing. Can't get under it at all its a very poor design IMO. By doing this I can jack from the suspension and will solve that problem (hope it does'nt cause others) Annexe wallls will be too short but will deal with that down the track.
