    D2 rear diff POP!

Hey got a call from my brother yesterday was camping out in blackwood when he went down a track and got stuck ( 2WD ute ) fool I was thinking so 5 pm emergency recovery needed, packed out all the gear and meet dad at the BP on the way, so two cars set off to see what happened.

Found the car he'd stopped at the top of a hill knowing no way could get down or back up. And the car started sliding down off a few rocks and stopped bye a tree.
So down we walked and with hand winch got the car right and down he drove, was almost at the bottom anyway!

So in low/lock 4 down I got after him to pick up the gear and see what we could do to get out.
Getting down was pretty easy and no too loose so we would try and pull the car up.
Got to the point he had stopped before and could not get any further, slowly made a few more meters and that was it not moving.
" right drop the pressures and bit and one last try before we go home for the night" bye now it was 11pm

Got about a foot and POP! "Oh poo, that did not sound good" no rear drive any more. Right home we go ain't gonna get any further now.

With no winch on the front we got some sleep.

Day 2 : with more recovery gear, food and drink and all the bits for the winch to work off we set to finish the job

Refit winch and bullbar to my car about 2 hours get all the gear out hit the winch control and Pur nothing "now that's just not fair" I was thinking.

lunch time while we think about this was the next move, well give the hand winch a go see how far we get.

Well that idea did not work too far and too steep off home to get a new winch and control box one should work it

As for the car the front drive and pull rear shaft is turning but no real sign from the wheels of any work, look to me like a rear diff had **** it's self.
But what do I do now still need to get the car out then home to fix!

Pull the rear axle shafts, if you have a bit of luck it was one of those that popped. If not then drop the rear prop. DRive home with CDL locked.. No shafts + No prop = idle diff and no further damage.

At least I imagine thats what I would do... Fortunatly I've not had this problem, and not familiar with the disco 2 either... soooo... good luck!

Not an easy job to pull the axes on the D2's.
The are splined through the bearing with a nut so the wheel bearing assey needs to be striped to do it.
It may need a press or a large knock-ometer.

I managed to limp mine home just on the centre diff lock.
I'd sugest drop the rear shaft and lock the diff.

    PM coming too.
    Cheers, Kyle

    Thanks all
rear shaft turns but no rear wheels so my money is on the diff.

Thanks for the offer but have a spare D1 car should be right to use that one?? Do the rear diff's fit the D2??

another option, if its the diff, is to put a Tru Trac in. About $600 locally.

Otherwise a mate with a D2a has two spare diff centres that he removed recently to put Tru Tracs in. I think he said he wanted $50ea for them (in Mitcham). PM me your contact details if you want them and I'll pass them on (he's not on line).

If you can afford it, go for the trutrac.

I have been told by JC that the D1 centre is a straight bolt in. That's why I have kept my D1 lockers to swap over to the D2. The housing are different though so can't swap complete diffs.

If it's the spider gears gone you can have my D1 ones from when I fitted the Detoit and TrueTrac.
    Cheers, David.
