Thread: Issues with tail/flasher lights on rear bumper

Might be the wiring loom for the rear parking sensors fitted to high spec models.

I notice that you haven't said you have checked the fuse. Have you?

Inspection shows that the globes are all intact, which leads me to believe that i've got a wiring issue or suchlike.

A quick poke around under the bumper reveals this multuplug under the left hand (when facing forward) light, and nothing to connect it to.

The only other thing i can think of that might be wrong is an improper instalation of the trailer light socket.

Anyway, has anyone come across this issue or have any idea what's going on?

Do you mean the rear PILLAR instead of the rear BUMPER. Your rear bumper has fog and reversing lights only.

I had an intermittent fault with my r/h rear pillar brake light fixed with contact cleaner to the bulb socket and multiplug that connects to the cluster

Also, i think you might be right about the parking sensors. They're listed in the workshop manual, but are obviosuly not on my car... seems a bit slack to just leave the loom hanging there tho.

I do mean the bumper lights, although i may have used the incorrect term (i thought i used the name that the workshop manual refers to them as... but as you can probably tell detail is not one of my strong points.)
i had a similar issue. replaced the whole light cluster before i figured it out... Luckily, that cluster was cracked and needed replacing anyway...

Looking at the first pic, if you are expecting the red lights in your bumper to light up with the brakes, then I have sad news for you...

These are the fog lights, and will only come on when the parkers or headlights are on, and then the switch on the LHS of the dash cluster is pushed.

I am not going to state the obvious, and tell you the white ones are the reversing lights, that only come on when you want to go backwards... cause you know that already... LOL

And yes, the spare wiring loom is probably for reversing sensors. It is all part of the one loom run to the back of the car. As you keep looking around the car, you will find several plugs & sockets that are empty, and are just hanging around. It is cheaper for car manufacturers to make 1 wiring loom for different spec cars, and then just plug in & program the options.

For example, if you look under the bonnet, up by the windscreen, you will probably find 2 more sockets just sitting there. They are for the heated front screen, which wasn't sent to Australia as standard.

Yeah, i took that picture with every button i could find on the instrument panel pressed to make sure i actually had power going to them.
Also, the car was running and in reverse gear and with the handbrake on, the front wheels chocked and a brick on the brake pedal for good measure (i really didn't feel comfortable getting out of the car and standing behind it with it in gear, for the car's sake as much as my own)

anyway, the front fog lights came on too when i replaced the fuse, (i feel like an idiot for neglecting to check them by the way)

now 3/4 of the lights work, mostly because i forgot to put the bulb back in when i re-assembled the housing and subsequently lost the bulb..

.... anyone else beginning to see a trend here? lol.

So my 2003 landrover has a break light issue, the L/H light only works when headlights are on. When they are off only the R/H breaklight turns on during breaking. What could be the issue here?

I'm guessing you have lost an earth/s which is why the brake lights work when the headlights, really tail lights are on as it is using that earth to work.
