There is a thread in electronic diagnosis that discusses testing the xyz switch. Unfortunately for the subscribers to the "do random **** and hope it works" school of diagnostics it requires methodical checking of each position to ensure the switches are fully functional.

I did mention my uncertainty towards the validity of that test
This absolves me of any responsibility.
    I should be a politician
I'm assuming the methodical checking you describe requires access to diagnostic equipment?

Righty ho...Here's a good tutorial put together by Michael2 on how to rebuild the XYZ switch....I would also be trying this before splashing out a shed load of cash on a new one...

For me, my 'dramas' with limp mode and flashing lights were a combination of.

1 Knackered battery. Replaced with 900cca Super Charge Gold
2 Knackered battery earth terminal. Replace with an upgraded one enabling me to run more earth connections direct to the battery.
3 Starter energiser wire. Crimp cut off and replaced with new one and joint sealed with adhesive lined heat shrink.

Thank all for advice and Dave for links. I will check a few of the things mentioned on the weekend. A couple of questions if I may please,
#1 The links Dave put up if I got this right mention when m&s lights flashing goes into limp mode with no drive and no gear showing on the dash yes? Mine flashes m&s, the red light showing what gear your in on the tbar stick flashes the same rate as m&s and my D on the dash flashes the same rate as the rest, all similtanously. I have drive but I think stuck in 3rd and wont go into lockup. Normally when I get this its while towing or changing gear D to R or R to D.
#2 When I spoke to LR well known repairer in Melb when I had my last TD5 regarding chip upgrades I said to him whats the catch? has to do something to the engine to get 40% more go and he said only thing is sometimes it can bring warning light on when towing heavy loads, more so going uphills. I have a chip upgrade in mine so when it comes on when I'm towing, could the chip have anything to do with it do you think?
    Worane again sorry mate.

1/ Normally all the same with some slight differences. The only way to tell is to read the codes if you can.

2/ chip upgrades can induce "Limp" mode as you over boost the vehicle & the auto is only good for X amount of torque.

I had my old D2 chipped & in wet days & planting it, it would bring on the lights.

One more thing to check is the wiring loom above the T/case. It goes through a metal "P" clip & can rub through the silver heat
protecting foil & in my case cut 2 wires.

Thanks for Sniegy will try to have a look at those wires when I can. Regarding chip, I wondered why it happened, yeah makes sense.
    Cheers mate
