Goes great - heaps of black smoke - back to great

    Hi Guys,

Just picked up my Disco 2A (TD5) yesterday up at Gosford. All was great. Came up to the a big hill on Central Coast Highway (just before F3) and didn't take it easy coming up (wanted to see how the D2 behaves on a windy long hill) and stopped at a set of lights. Out of the blue the revs went down, heaps of black smoke and couldn't move - just would not go up past idle. Switched off, restarted and then could just barely move off to a side street. Panic call to the previous owner and her mechanic and no one know what could be wrong. Sat there for a few minutes, restarted and it's back to normal. Went down the same hill and up again (thought there was a little hiccup) and everything was good. Drove back to Sydney without any hassles, Disco goes great, keeps up speed on the hills around MoonyMoony... drove around the burbs here and there (moving house) and all's great. Doesn't miss a beat...

Any ideas? The Disco has not done that before according to the mechanic and the owner - who was sad to give it up for a LandCrusher

Well, the Disco is a great vehicle I simply love it. The only downside is I should have bought one ages ago

It's being starved for air, I would be looking at the air hoses for softening, delaminating, rats in the air cleaner box... (don't laugh, it happened to my wife's Camry), a loose rag in the intake. etc.

I am sure it was overfueling or air starvation just looking for ideas for causes of a one-off (hopefully) event. Just seemed odd as later on it went great without any signs of the same up and down hills and I wasn't gentle either.
If it is a blown/damaged air hose it would also be quite coincidental as my Flandie blew an intercooler hose two weeks ago... but then again I should not be surprised - last month was nothing but coincidences, convergences and everything happening NOW...

Overfuelling a turbo diesel causes engine runaway and loud banging noises when it breaks. Yours was definitely lacking air.

OK. Thanks. I was kinda looking at it from a "too much fuel for available air" general scenario ... but I guess overfuelling is different to suffocation

Inside of hose balloons under boost blocking the air flow

Get a set of silicone ones, supposed to prevent it from doing it again
