Suspension lift questions - spring or air?

    Hi all,

I am looking to get a lift for the old girl so we can go camping with the camper trailer without the back end sagging too much. I currently have a coil model TD5 (no SLS).

Should i go for 2" lifted coils with helper bags or change completely to airbags?

We mainly use the car for touring/daily driving so don't need heavy duty coils which was why I was thinking about helper bags. But then I thought maybe replacement airbags instead of springs would be more suitable and easier to setup for towing as well as normal driving. Or am I just mad to change to bags?

    Thoughts please.

    Cheers,
    Nova

I think there are pros and cons for each. Most of those who have air bags love them for the ride and handling, until the compressor dies or the air bag leaks out in the sticks.

I have raised coils and Polyair bags for the last 5 years and have been very happy with the arrangement. It is argued the springs are more robust and less likely to break on you. They are likely to cost less intially and in the long run, too.

Thanks for that. I think i will stick with simple. The more I think about it the more complex sounding it is to change to airbags.

Just need to find a decent set of springs/shocks and some helper bags for the rear.

    Cheers,

Conversion to SLS is rare - cost would be a major factor.

You can get a very nice ride out of coils if you specify them correctly (you generally won't get the right formula with off the shelf models) and if you add airbag inserts you can add loads with minimal sagging. Cost is much lower for this option.

SLS is the ideal from many perspectives but it does have shortcomings (cost/complexity/reliability vs coils).
