    ignition keys

I recently bought a 1999 d2 TD5. It only had one key. I bought a replacement from the UK. It does not have a board in it.
I have had the key cut to fit my car.
My question is, can I get a key from a wreckers yard and have the internal "board" reprogrammed to suit my car?
    Cheers Nick.

It is actually the vehicle's BCU that is programed to recognise the key fob code. If you get a complete fob make sure it has the 6 letter/digit code sticker on the back of the circuit board (to use with a Nanocom) or comes with its barcode tag that a L/R dealer will use with testbook.

Firstly, the keys for the disco have two frequencies. They are either 315 or 433 Mhz. The frequency is determined from the VIN (typically). The only time this is not the case is if the BCU has been changed (by a previous owner for example). Anyhow probably the quickest way to find out the frequency for your car is to call a dealer and ask them. You will need your VIN handy. If you have Microcat you can also find this out for yourself. Pretty sure you'll need a 315Mhz (check this site for key related questions for more info).

With regards to your questions regarding a key from the wreckers, yes that is possible but you need to get a key with the same frequency (so a similar year model should be ok). If you don't have the tools to re-programme yourself the dealer will most likely charge about $60.

By the way you can buy brand new keys from OS for between $120 - $160 (genuine). Sometimes wreckers and especially dealers are not the best places to source key (in fact dealers I would say are the worse ($360).

    Regards
    Andrew
