fuel pump locking ring
Took the fuel pump out , now can't get the locking ring to stay locked and hold the pump down.
Sick of spilling diesel all over forecourts after thinking I had fixed the thing.
I have located the lug on the right hand (drivers) side between the two stops that hold it. Screwed the top down and a day later the thing is spewing diesel about. Costs too much to throw it away and dangerous on a wet road.
Can anyone help with any ideas.
I thought of making up a block / spacer to hold it down under the black steel inspection cover if all else fails.

Your rubber seal will be incorrectly located. You fit it to the tank first, then lube the edge of the pump housing so the pump slides down neatly. It shouldn't depend on the tightness of the locking ring as the seal has ridges that do the leak stopping.

Also, With the D2, if you have a late 2001 onward with a steel locking ring, they are a single thread start type, IE they require the ring to locate in 1 spot ONLY to start the thread correctly. It is usually at the drivers (RH) side of the tank, about 1 oclock when viewed from above. You will need to eyeball the corresponding beginning part of the thread on the ring and begin engaging from that point.
I have had problems with this in the past.
The earlier D2 and Def plastic locking rings are far easier, never had issues with these as they have a shallower double helix type thread that 'self starts' very easily.

thanks
Bee utey And Justinc. I can't thank you both enough for all your help in the matter of my fuel pump / tank top seal.
After I took all the pipes off the head of the pump and pulled it out of the tank, I then removed the rubber gasket which was still seated under the top lip of the pump.
I set the seal down into the slot behind the lip on the lower rubber gasket which was still fixed to the tank itself and WAMO! The whole thing fitted together easy as pie.
I have been trying to fix this thing for weeks and it was starting to do my head in. THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH.
Best wishes Nick.

ring
Yes, my ring is made of steel too. The seal between the two rubber gaskets was the problem till I took it off the pump and placed it in the correct position over the ring secured to the tank
