    No power steering!

Hopped in my 04 disco today and had no power steering at all. Noticed that the resevoir was empty on the return side. I had previously noticed that it was bubbling but have had in for a service since then and nothing was said. There was a large puddle on the ground where it has obviously leaked over night. I had the power steering pump done about 12 months ago and I'm hoping it's just a hose or connection not the pump again.

So I am wondering; firstly, is it normal for it to bubble or does it mean air in getting in somewhere?
Secondly, if it is a hose where would the most likely one to split/rub be?

    Thanks

What side of the car is the leak on? If the Pass side then it could be the suction hose from the reservoir to the pump. It's a low pressure and it's a different size on each end so you can't just replace it easily.

if youve started it and the oil in the resivior is bubbling and you dont have an oilfall under the vehicle or a pretty rust protection pattern around the front of the engine bay then its the suction line from the resivior to the pump or one of the fittings on it.

The suction line, when mine failed, I couldn't get a replacement. As I said it's a different size and has a couple of bends in it. If you go to a Pirtek/Enzed they'll have hose in both sizes & brass fittings to both do the bends and reduce the size from end to end. Cost about $80- with norma clamps as well but it's pretty much fail proof and you only need to carry less than a foot of both sizes as spares if you're that way inclined.

There is a pipe that goes down from the reservoir area and near the sump - ours chafed on the sump and rubbed through.

our siddint drain overnight - too about 1 liter a day to keep it working till the pipe showed up though.

Simple enough replacement - hose from the stealership was about $80
I elected to buy the pipe from the stealership rathar than going around places trying to find the right fittings etc.
