Cool running ATF

Your setup is very similair to mine (detailed in a thread elsewhere in here), however, I have not fitted an additional fan on my cooler.

60*C is a good temperature for the automatic transmission to be at once warmed up. You don't want it's constant running temperature to be much below that though.

The best resource for a guide on the transmission temperatures is http://www.digi-panel.com/digidevicesweb/trannyoil.htm (it's recommended by Ashcroft who are the UK specialists on the LR ZF transmissions).

The site suggests 65°C is the minimum operating temp for transmission oil.
Ideal operating temp is listed as 80°C to 93°C.

Thanks Paul. I suspected I might have been borderline a bit too cool!

If the ATF is too cool, the TC doesn't lock up until it gets enough heat into it. Thats at least what mine does. I notice this a lot between summer and winter.

I'm fairly sure lockup is controlled by the engine temperature. I checked RAVE and the wiring diagrams and the temp sender in the auto oil cooler is only connected to the Transmission Temp warning light.

... finally found the info! It pays to be an inveterate collector of documentation sometimes. This is buried in a LR NAS document, but I believe similar behaviour also applies to the Td5.

The table doesn't really tally with my experience. I know from observation of my D2's behaviour that it takes until the temp gauge is at least midway between cold and normal before the Auto will lock, although I don't often get into situations where I'm at lockup speed before the engine warms up and the ambient temp is at least 25°C. :)

Thanks Paul - you are about to, or have just hit 1,000 thanks!!!!!

Temp needle on my D2 and from testing a few starts to move at about 50 and hits middle at 70 or so. Stays there until 102 then jumps to the top and then the light comes on.

Yep! Appears to be working correctly for a factory gauge! They must all be made to the same specs, wether a ford, holden toyota or landrover

Well after all that, with the warmer weather today, and my glasses on, the temp was sitting all day at 65!!!!!
