Would that be a TD5 by any chance?
Hi all,
I have a vibration issue on my D2, it's noticeable between 80-90, its a harsh vibration that sort of hunts (how do you describe a noise). I described it to my mechanic who said it was engine mounts. does all this mean anything to anyone, what could it be
cheers
Would that be a TD5 by any chance?

There are a few things that can cause a vibration, and the D2 tends to have a harmonic at 80km/h so any vibration is amplified at that speed.
Engine mounts is 1 problem, but you can often see cracking/defects in the mounts.
The DC joint on the front prop shaft is another, I know this one from experience and if it is left untreated can cause a lot of expensive damage.
Loose wheel nuts is a simple problem that will cause vibration.
I had a vibration recently that would come in and out but mostly when accelerating under light load. I finally worked out that I had a 1/2 miss and it turned out that the insulation on one of the plug leads had worn through at the coil pack and was shorting out. I was surprised at how this small problem caused so much vibration.
And I also forgot that a cracked harmonic balance will cause vibration.
Multiple reasons for this and a process of elimination
in order of cost - low to high
- dont drive between 80-90
- wheel balance
- rear rubber donut on rear prop shaft
- engine mounts
- gearbox mounts
- handbrake drum needs re-alignment
- propshaft rebalance
thats exhausted my knowledge.
by the way I've lived with vibration at 89-92 then above 115 for the past 5 yrs even after doing 2, 3, 4 without any improvement so if you fix it, let me know.
Check your front prop shaft. Well known problem with the D2. Also check it out in the good oil.

Andrew
yep, TD5
Thanks everyone for advice, will investigate possible causes, I do have a worn donut to replace.
