    Installing new thermostat......

    After reading comments on here by people who have installed a new lower temp thermostat into their V8's I decided to do the same.

    However, after the install it is now running hotter than before. On a short trip it was running at 105. Any help would be appreciated as I have to leave Tuesday towing a 2.5T van.

    So far I have made sure water is topped up. I also removed the bleed screw and pumped water into the overflow bottle till a steady stream came out the bleed nozzle. I didn't do this while the engine was running. Should I???

    I would assume you need to open the thermostat to ensure you fill the radiator and engine cavities, so I would think you need to run the motor after filling the expansion tank/hoses/radiator etc.

    I know this was the case on the Datsun 1200 so I'm assuming the same for the D2. I would get another opinion though.

    The workshop manual suggest you run it then top it up.

    The whole procedure is on pages 26-2-13 & 26-2-14.

    Yes, I did all that but I am still getting hot temps. The only thing I did was change the thermostat. So either the thermostat is faulty or ?????

    Did you put it in the wrong way around?

    By the way, as a bit of insurance, you can check if the thermostat is faulty or not prior to installing by dunking it in hot water.

    Thanks. You can't put it in the wrong way round as the thermostat is in a sealed plastic T piece.
    My gut feeling is that the problem is an air lock so I will spend a bit more time on this tomorrow. If it doesn't come good I will try putting the old thermostat back.

    After bleeding the cooling system a couple of times I was still getting hot running temps. So I re-installed the old thermostat today and everything is back to normal. I can only assume I got a bad thermostat.

    Hi Pete, You can't really see it because it is encased in plastic. I tried pouring hot water into the inlet side to see if it would open and let water out....but it didn't. But then I tried it with the old one that I know works and that didn't work either.

    Will do some more testing when I get back from holidays.
