CV failure causing axle leak?
Hi all,
I've just done 700 Km in the D2 and there's now quite a heavy leak on the front left knuckle, it appears that the axle seal has let go, question is, what is the likely cause? I thought the breather but that is clear when checked.
I think I'm getting some clicking noises from that CV when travelling but can hear nothing when jacking a wheel up and rotating by hand, I've also had a few vibrations when the auto shifts 3rd to 4th under full load - only started on the drive down south so I'm thinking that the CV is letting go and binding every now and then and flogging the axle around a bit causing the seal failure. Does this all sound plausible?
How much end float should the half shaft exhibit exiting the axle and entering the CV joint - mine floats out by 2mm I reckon and the CV boot springs it back - again there seems to be no radial play, or is there a bearing in the axle end preventing this?
The only part that confuses me is the absence of any noise when on the jack stand
Sorry for the number of questions - I don't want to just replace a seal to have to do it all over again next week.
Cheers
Rich
