If that's a picture of the RHS of the bellhousing just behind the engine then its supposed to be that way.
Its a hole that you put the crank locking tool in when setting the valve timing when doing the head gasket.

After jumping under my disco to try and sort out a rattling low-range stick (it's seriously annoying), i saw this:
Not being a mechanic, this seems like a bad thing, but i defer to the experts.
Is this supposed to be like this?
if not can i drive home safely? and how is such a thing repaired?
any and all help would be appreciated ASAP.

Nup, just checked and dont have anything even close to that. not even a bung, spigot or anything, sorry.
