    Alternator Help

    my alternator needs replacing.

    got quoted $985 (ridiculous) for one from the local specialist.
    I see them on the internet for more than half that price.
    eg: Landrover Discovery Defender TD5 2.5L Turbo Diesel 120Amp Vacuum Pump Alternator | eBay

    is the ebay one good enough? or do i need to get the genuine one?
    is there a better price from somewhere else? cant afford to wait too long for freight.

    any help is appreciated.

    at $399 it is a good price, the one in the pic is a genuine denso, which is oem. confirm make / brand and you are on a winner. these do not rebuild well, at $399 it is best to buy new.

    try Gary at CLR - he got me a 300tdi 100amp alternator for around $350 IIRC & he uses express post. 02 4754 2642

    its the regulators. apparently its too expensive just to change the regulators so they just do the whole alternator.

    Is this something i can fix my self? I have quite a few tools and I am not completely ignorant as to the engine bay.

    I am on the Sunshine Coast.

    The car is at the mechanics that is 20 mins of 100km/h driving away. Will a battery make it that far?

    I thought the factory TD5 alternators were 120 amp?
    is that new? might be worth the call

    A regulator, bearings, slip rings and usually a diode pack/ rectifier is required. Yes they are expensive by the time you pay someone else to remove and repair and refit. I would say go with the new one.

    With high mileage Td5 Denso alternator failures I just buy new now. The Vac pump also doesn't get repaired when overhauling the electrical side of the unit, so IMO it is false economy to spend $350 on an incomplete repair.

    I really like that Ebay price, did you confirm with the seller that is a genuine Denso unit? If aftermarket unbranded however, I wouldn't buy it

    Slip rings are not available

    Unless someone else has been successful at procuring them, slip rings are not available from nd.

    Hi. You can get a replacement regulator and brushes on eBay from the UK for about $80 delivered. It takes about a week. I replaced them, had the alternator tested and now works perfectly.
