Disco TD5 fuel usage and possible power problems

HI Guys 1st post for me. I have had my Discovery 2 TD5 auto for around 8 months now. I have a Bruce Davis chip, allisport (manual Intercooler) and 2.5" exhaust to maxiflow muffler then 3 inch after that. I am only getting around 450 Kms to the tank and the power is not really what I would have expected, I had a 200 TDI (manual) with an exhaust and pump tweaking prior and that was possibly better. Do the auto D2 usually rev a lot and not seem to get anywhere? Anyone have any ideas???

The transmission may be slipping, as a starting point try a stall test:

From the workshop manual: Stall Testing
    1. Chock the wheels and fully apply the
    handbrake.
    2. Start the engine and run it until it reaches
    normal operating temperature.
    3. Apply the footbrake and select 'D'.
    4. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and note
the tachometer reading. The figures should be
as given below. Do not carry out stall test for
longer than 10 seconds, and DO NOT repeat
    until 30 minutes have elapsed.

    V8: 2200 to 2400 rev/min
    Diesel: 2600 to 2800 rev/min
    5. A reading below 1300 rev/min indicates a
torque converter fault, ie stator free-wheel.
    6. A reading between 1300 and 2200 rev/min (V8)
    or between 1300 and 2600 rev/min (Diesel)
    indicates reduced engine power.
    7. A reading above 2400 rev/min (V8) or above
2800 rev/min (Diesel) indicates clutch slip.
NOTE: The figures quoted above were
measured at sea level with an ambient
temperature of 20°C (68°F). At higher altitudes
or higher ambient temperatures, these figures
    will be reduced.

Thanks Gary, I have done a stall test and comes up right on 2750 RPM so no issues with that.

[QUOTE=adam mann;1860680] I am only getting around 450 Kms to the tank

I get that from half a tank! Even with a chip you should be getting somewhere around 800-850klm i would have thought.
Rpm should be around the 2200 from memory.
What size tyres do you have on it?
    cheers

    Welcome to the forum!

    Checking the simple stuff first:

    Air cleaner element clean?
    Entire intake tract clean?
    No issues with intercooler hoses?
    Fuel pump working properly?
    No fuel leaks?
    Any injector error codes?
Any thick black smoke on acceleration?
    Injector loom clean of oil?
Intake sensors all clean and functional?
Clean new(ish) auto fluid and the right amount?
    Regards, Will

Thank you, I have cleaned the injector loom, replaced the air cleaner only just fitted the Intercooler and hoses around 2000 kms ago. I have not checked for injector fault codes I will have to get a nanocom I guess to do this. Auto fluid and filter changed about 5000 Kms ago. From a standing start it will blow a slight puff of smoke the fuel block at the back of the engine does have a very very slight leak, not enough to be the problem I don't think. (I will change it next though)

OK, looks good so far. Did you change the auto fluid yourself; if so did you add enough, so that the fluid was spilling out of the fill hole after cycling through the gears? How did the old fluid look? Bright red? Black? Smell burnt?

Do you have any issues with maintaining 100km/h up a slight hill, or any jerking or hesitations?

Do you have a light mist of oil over the back window, some spotting that seems strange? when you say the fuel block has a slight leak, does that mean that it drips a little on the concrete when the vehicle is turned off? If so, when under pressure it may be peeing the diesel out...

I did change it myself the old oil seemed very good and didn't seem to have that burnt smell about it. I put the right amount of trans fluid back in and I have checked it since and all is good. The fuel block doesn't seem to drip yet and no leaks on the concrete but I am going to change this anyway. You mentioned weird oil spots and yes I do seem to have that on the rear door and bumper but not a mist as such.

I'd get some fresh cardboard and stick it under the engine bay, run the vehicle and see if there are any leaks, as it may be leaking under pressure. Wouldn't surprise me if you're losing a fair bit of fuel from the pressure regulator.

I'm sure that more knowledgeable members will be along soon with more advice and insight.
