Did you use a genuine gasket?, and sealant at the specified locations?
Hi all,
I've spent all weekend working on the disco TD5, installed new oil pump bolt, new sump gasket and new fuel pressure reg.
I was praying to the gods for no leaks and unfortunately I have what looks to be an oil leak dripping from one of the bell housing bolts.
I looked for but can't see an external oil trail from any where else.
I've re torqued both the sump bolts in that area and the 4 bell housing bolts without any luck.
What else can I try? I'm over working on it for the time being and if there no easy solution I might drop the disco of at my local LR indie.
Followed all steps as per the following link.

Cheers

I had a leak from the same area when I got mine.
When I had the sump off I noticed the rubber dowels had not been located and where crushed.
They are a pain to locate and I had 2 goes with the new gasget to get it right.
Also check it's not coming from the rear of the rocker cover(1/2 moon section).
seconded, it sounds like you screwed up the fitting of the locating dowels in the back of the rear main seal plate, you're not alone.
I usually use a bucket load of zipties to keep everything in alignment as I'm lifting everything up.
in a pinch with the use of lots of sealant you can simply trim them back flat and go again, but I dont reccomend it.

Urban Panzer and RAVE have incorrect sump torque figures. The gasket design was modified after the final issue of RAVE in 2002/3. The 4 rear bolts need 2-3Nm higher torque than that given in RAVE.
I did get them up to 28nm as per the updated specs. Thanks for posting them in one of your other posts.
Alien and Blknight.aus might be on the money. I used a few cable ties but I had to prematurely cut the rear ties as I could not get the rear of the sump to match up against the bell housing with them on.
I ran my finger across the gasket between the block and sump before tightening up the bolts and it all seemed to be pretty equal without any high spots?
Anyway, seeing as I tried my best at following instructions carefully, took my time and still might have got it wrong, I've lost confidence in investing the same time and maybe getting it wrong again.
Does anybody know the going rate for a sump seal job at an indie LR mechanic?
Thanks guys.
It looks like I may not be a total retard on the tools after all
I had my local LR indie have a look and they said there was no leak from the sump gasket and they found a small leak between the oil return pipe and the sump which I already knew about.
I had them fix it along with a new radiator top hose which was just starting to seep through the webbing.
Took it for a drive and yep, no sump leak? all good.
My original thought was that there may have been some diesel still lingering about after changing the fuel pressure reg but I kept on cleaning under there and was still getting what seemed like oil building up into a drip as shown in my original post.
Anyway, all happy now. I was getting all ready to say them brave words "leak free" but I noticed the rocker cover gasket leaking in the rear
So ticked off the list are:
· Fixed leaking transfer case ( LR indie )
· Fixed leak between auto and transfer case (LR indie ) I feel special as they have never had to fix that type of leak
· Fixed leaking Auto Trans sump gasket, new trans fluid and filter (myself)
· Replaced drivers side window motor (myself)
· Checked and replaced oil pump bolt (myself)
· Replaced fuel pressure regulator (myself)
· Service - Engine oil change, filters etc (myself) Actually enjoyed this one
· Replaced bulb behind the digital clock.
To do list:
· Fix rocker cover gasket leak
· Change diff oil.
· Install Engine Saver (already have the sensor in the top hose)
Suspect List:
· Radiator, Have to confirm whether the coolant down there from the leaking radiator hose which has just been replaced. (Have a new radiator on standby)
Paranoid List:
· Water pump (no history of it being changed so assuming it’s the original)
· Thermostat (no history of it being changed so assuming it’s the original)
· Harmonic Balancer
