d2 td5 intercooler upgade. do I need a boost box?
I have been driving around in my d2 for 2 or so years.
I have the stage 1 davis performance ecu. Done the egr blank off. Now I want to upgade the cooler. I have been told by ritters the ecu needs updating? He also said i need a boost box?
Now i know that putting in a larger cooler in will drop the over all boost to the inlet being a larger area to standad. But wouldnt the map sencer just tell the waste gate to stay closed till it reads the right incomming pressure anyway? I got the waste gate rod set to just before overboost cut out.
Or is the ritter guy just selling the idea of going stage 2 ecu and boost box to get higher then 20psi and more fuel to make use of the bigger cooler? Although he didnt use the words stage 2 ecu he just said the ecu will beed something updated to suit the cooler.
He also said put in 3 inch pipes to help with cooling too
My plan was ofcourse i was to just to drop the larger cooler and be done with it.
Just to lower temps and keep the boost at max before cut off.
What do you guys recommend?

Depends what level of boost you want whether or not you will need a boost box. Fitting the intercooler will actually lower the boost (due to the more effective cooling and larger capacity), you will need to adjust the wastegate to suit. So depends on how far you adjust it. If you want the maximum benefits then you are likely to want to go between 18 to 22psi and will then likely need a turbo boost box. They're not that expensive to buy from the UK.
Regarding exhaust, the 2 1/2" is sized right. 3" is only necessary when running a much bigger turbo charger. However, there are gains to be had from replacing the mufflers with more freer flowing units and the flexible joint with a larger diameter one.
More boost and power doesn't always equal worse fuel economy.
There's plenty of threads on this already - do some searching and reading and you'll have more of an idea, but the above should help you along the way.

Yeah although after a picked the intercooler from ritters. We talked over the options agian and they said to fit the cooler. Re adjust the rod again but said the best yull gwt is 18 to 19 psi and see how that gos.
Then they said if you want even more power then upgade the ecu too stage 2 fuel map. Fit a boost box and put on a 3inch exhaust. He said the exhaust will take off another 90deg temp off the egt. But will sound like a truck.
So when i got home i installed the intercooler and adjusted the rod. And took it for a drive. around 3krpm it feels alot more torquey then before.
Now im only useing 50% thottle to hit over boost at 3k if i press the peddal down to the floor it doest drive any harder. And no plums of black smoke too.
So im thinking why do i not get over fueling when i dump it to the floor? It must all be tied into the ecu limitations based on the max boost cut off.
Would fooling the map sener allow the ecu to use more fuel (the other 50% of the peddal) as well as letting it over boost?
