Front Tail Shaft DIIa TD5 2004

Well folks the front uni on my DCJ has failed and needs some love so I have come to the forum for some (hopefully) quick responses to a few q's I have.

I have found on the good oil that the spicer part # for the DCJ uni's is K5-L4R. Does this apply to the front uni on the front tailshaft also as I will just replace them all while its apart.

Next question is, has anyone had any problems with their transfer case after driving around with the CDL locked and front tailshaft out. I have done this on mt D1 whithout a prob and plan to do it with my DIIA while the front shaft is give some TLC on the bench.

    Thanks for replies in advance

    Dave

    Hello davrac,

I did around about 400 to 500km with the front drive shaft out and CDL locked.

I drove it lightly and have had no issues(approx 10,000km done since).

    Cheers,

    Jason

    Hi

Drove mine around for about 3 days while I fixed the tailshaft only about a month ago. I have to say I think it may have created a problem for me as the transfer case leaked from the rear seal whilst I was driving like this. Now the tailshaft is back in it seems ok, probably just coincidence but just thought I would mention it as possible side effect.

I think I should also mention that changing the uni joints was the hardest job I have done so far on the car. I don't mind having a go at fixing the car and I have done the rear air bags, the fuel pressure reg, replaced door lock mech's and do my own oil changes but this one nearly broke me and I wished I had of just forked out the $500 for the exchange one.

If you have done uni joints before and have the right tools then no worries.

I have to agree simpin68. I have replaced many unit joints in the past and this was by far the most difficult. If it goes again I will drop the shaft at hardy spicer and pay them to do it.

I did about 4-5000K's and drove without thinking about it without issue.

Tom Woods is another option, off the shelf from Jeep Konnection, $600- shipped, wider angle joints, fully greasable, brand new.

I drove about 1000km with the front shaft out while I waited 2 weeks for the Tom Woods one to come from Jeep Konnection. Took a while longer to come as they misplaced the order (could happen to anyone). Best $600 I've spent on the thing!
