Chip upgrade or Plug in Box

I have a 2000 D2 manual TD5 and want more power for towing. Seems there are three options:
1.Send ECU away for a chip unsolder and reflash? (Do they then solder in a chip holder so that then it is chip plug and play)

2.Change ECU for a NNN000120 or NNN500020 which I understand would work with my throttle pedal.

3.Buy a plug in box fron DTuk, TRS, Chipit etc

Opinions sought on best way to go and/or corrections to my options if they are incorrect.
    Thanks in advance

The ECU in my MY00.5 was just swapped with an upgraded one. I have a Davis Performance Landys one, but I think TRS in SA does them also.
    Cheers

Thanks Slunnie, was this an option 1 or 2 on my list?
Looks like we are both night owls

I've recently done the TRS exchange for my 2000 Td5 Manual. Cost is around $660 inc GST.

Here's the process ... you send them around $1000, they send you a chipped ECU, you get a nanocom and read and save your current settings, remove the old, install the new and re-write the injector settings. Send back the old ECU to TRS and then they refund around $400.

Definite improvement with torque and acceleration ... certainly helps with towing but you'll still be changing gears on hills.

    Hope that helps.

    Thumbs up ECU Upgrade

Mate the wife & I set out about two years ago towing a 23' van & all our worldly belongings behind our D2 S2A TD5 manual. She performed quite admirably with only a 3" exhaust & free flowing filter but struggled on larger hills. We had the Davis ECU upgrade performed at MR Automotive in Redcliffe QLD along with slotted & cross drilled front rotors ( the brakes needed a little help also ) Long story a little shorter, she pulled much, much better & would hold 5th gear on all but the worst hills ( not recommended for gearbox life due to the torque load ) Fuel consumption about the same unless I had the foot into her.
We recently purchased a new TDCI defender & I purchased the Atric system through Bruce. It has almost made the Defender & automatic to drive. Give Davis Performance a call. Can't recommend the company enough.
    Regards Chris.

    Bess.
I have a 23ft caravan and a D2a TD5 manual. I had the same issues, but after a BD remap, silicone IC hoses, Boost box, increased boost setting a custom alloy inter cooler and a 3" exhaust has stirred her along some. But still, it can be improved, next is a remap and a VNT.
    Regards

    1. on the earlier ecu they remove a chip inside the ecu and replace with a new chip, involves solder and delicate hands. any changes need the same chip replacement. you only need a nanocom if buying a second ecu to swop in so that injector codes can be matched.

    2. changing to the later ecu you can reprogramme the ecu in situ via the connection under the steering wheel. this allows tweeks to be made but you still need a nanocom to change the file map.

    3. i believe these systems just trick the ecu on output to the engine, not a true reprogrammed ecu like option 1 & 2.

pm offtrack re option 2, i am not sure the NNN numbers when the newer ecu's came in.

Talk to Tombie on here. He's the fountain of info on this subject. IMO, later ECU with upgrade.... This way the ECU is still doing what it's suppose to do... Controlling the engine. Any bolt on is 'tricking' the ECU's output signals so there's always room for error! Just my thoughts and experiences with tractors... Tombie will give the right answer tho!

G-day Robbo, I drove a short 90 TD5 auto at BDP at Amaroo recently that Bruce has tricked up, usual mods & a "pretty special turbo" according to Bruce. Mate it was a rocket.
Not sure how long it would last thou if hauling our 23' turtle around .
    Regards Chris.
P.S; I have a real soft spot for the TD5. Last of the Mohicans.
