Turn your fog light switch on; they will work, cause they are not brake lights, I've thought about changing mine to brake lights
....
Hi folks
This will probably be an easy one for someone...
Since buying my '99 5 speed a month or so ago, one of the things I've been trying to resolve is that the bumper insert brake lights don't work.
Changed bulbs in both, checked continuity, checked for power - no power to the bulb holders... The associated indicators work fine, so it is obviously an issue with the harness - somewhere. Can anyone please tell me where I can find the connection for the harness to these lights so I can trace the line?
I thought it might be to the white plugs located behind the "vents" in the trim panels either side of the tail gate, but these just seem to be earths? It has a trailer plug - I don't know if this is a factor as I can't find where this cuts in to the harness either!
Thanks in advance
Mike

Hi Joe
Thanks I will try that
However, they are brake lights on my 2001! So I'm thinking either someone has modified them to operate as that, otherwise I wouldn't have noticed a difference, or it's one of those little things LR decided to change along the way...
Cheers

Yes, I would say that yours has been modified.
Easy enough to do with some cable and diodes, even easier if you dont want to keep the fogs operational
Hi Mike,
On a 99 Fog and Indicators on the bumper, Park, Brake and Reverse up high.
On the face lift they swapped the Reverse and Indicator lights, not sure about the Fog and Brake but I thought that they stayed put...
The problem with Land Rovers is you keep trying to find something wrong to fix.

Hi Ron
Yes I know what you mean...
Hmm, curious, so I have been duped for the last 6 years! I will have a look around in the back of the '01 to see what's been done and possibly replicate it on the '99. Yes, I like the "cleaner" look of the D2a tail lights, but like the headlamps, I can't be bothered doing a conversion
On that note, I thought it had become law (in the 90's?) for 4WD's to have brake lights in the bumper due to rear mounted spares "obscuring the brake lights from some angles" - or have the powers that be gotten over that?I think I had a conversation with a service centre about this when I had my first D1, as I couldn't figure out why the "body" mounted lights had no connections and it was left up to the bumper inserts for lighting duties - if memory serves the lamps that did/did not work altered over the life of the D1, changing perhaps in '93/'94 with the face lift model.
Cheers
