    To buy D2a or D3

    Hi Guys,
I'm looking at getting in to the world of Landrovering. My folks have a D4 (so nice but out of my $ range) and Ive been reading the forums for some time now and with my finances I'm looking at a 2003-04 D2a with low km in top condition but for that money I'm kind of starting to cross over into D3 territory. V8 is okay as I don't do many km during the week (I've had a Grand Cherokee V8 before so used to that sort of fuel consumption).
I really like the D2a HSE with all the goodies. I'm thinking it's the last year of D2 and probably the best.
Or would I be better looking more closely early at D3's?

    Cheers
    Craig

What to you want to do with it Craig??

Tour, easy-medium offroading, or balls out extreme 4wding??

Either vehicle will suit the first two options (personally I'd go a D3 if funds allowed, for options one and two), but if it's the third option, the D2a has far more accessories to allow for some pretty extensive modifications. Having said that, they're both very capable out of the box too.

It all comes down to what purpose the vehicle will be used.

D2a is the best looking Disco , if appearance has any influence on your decision.

Guess all that's left to do is find a nice D3 then.

Agreed. Probably the reason I want to do a D2a headlight conversion on my D2.

    What a weird thread!

Go test drive them both and make your decision! Plenty of reviews and buyers guides online to get a feel for the capabilities, good and bad points on each.

The reality is that for the same price as a low end D3, you can get a much lower km D2/D2a in much better condition overall.
You would have to spend more to get a D3 in as good a condition.
Also there is the V8/TD choice to consider.
So how big is your budget? Does it extend that extra for the D3 in good condition?

Personally, my preference is for the D2, which is why I have my D2a HSE. But I chose it because I wanted a 4WD that has all the comforts but still relatively basic so that I am comfortable being able to do all the work on it myself at home. It's not my only vehicle (my other being a Ford Pursuit ute with all the luxuries).
If/when it comes time to upgrade, I don't think I will consider the D3. The Mercedes-Benz G-wagon has my attention - has a lot of standard features that put other 4WD's to shame and cost a fair bit to fit aftermarket. Alternatively the Toyota FJ Cruiser if they put a diesel motor into it.
If I only had one vehicle then I would probably have looked for more of an SUV luxury cruiser - D3 HSE, Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, Ford Explorer Limited instead.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I hope to get out looking in the next couple of weeks and after a few test drives get a better feel for my preferences.

    Cheers

d2a, for no logical reason other than it is far sexier and as mentioned you'd get far less mileage for cash than you would a d3

I like the style of the D2 - its the last silhouette to be instantly recognizable as a LR. Its relatively simple and cheap to maintain - the suspension bushing, diffs and driveline seem to outlast the new shape - especially the expensive bushes that chop out in the D3/4.

The D3 is a nicer drive, but its all relative and I love the feeling that I am driving a nice truck rather than a competent sedan.

Drive them mate. I have views about them on sand - the D3, but wont bore you with that. You just get so much more for your dollar with the D2 and you have a heap of cash left over for toys - long term same thing re maintenance.

    Cheers
