Wouldn't know, I've only ever seen my Td5 blow smoke once or twice.

Mod hat on: I think we have had enough enthralling discussion on the relative merits of v8's vs td5 for this thread. Can we stick to answering the OP's question from here on.
Certainly.
To OP.
Diesel or Petrol?
Manual or Auto?
I have a few rattles, the handle on my glovebox rattles when it works loose.
my centre console rattled, thankfully it seems to have gone away now that I've done a bit of securing work on that area.
I have a rattle from my Drivers side rear passenger door area, I'm yet to work out what it is but my suspicions are the trim panel that I falsely removed when looking for an earth point.
Given that your vehicle is going on 13 years old, it's not surprising that it will have a few rattles, particularly from worn trim clips.
There's a thread in the Good Oil, Mr Pedros domain, about chasing Td5 rattles, squeaks, vibrations, etc.
It's about 30 pages long last I looked, might be a good place to start.
If you have a V8, ball is out of my court as they're normally "Super smooth" so perhaps Pedro, Dan, Eevo, Walker, etc can help you out there.
Cheers

For a TD5 around 99% likely to be engine mounts.Mine were on the way out, after replacement no more rattles in the dash etc.
Trev.
If I remember correctly, can also be the nuts/bolts that hold the passenger airbag - assuming you have airbags
Maybe an earring in the ashtray. ;)
Yes the TD5 vibrations - just had both enginemounts replaced, vibrations gone - seems like a whole new car!:)
It was unfortunate for me that the dealer somehow missed all the water running out of a head gasket, but that will be another post.:(
