I used two metal flat paint scrapers in place of plastic.

I used plasterers spatulas. Theres a few different widths available and they are the right thickness. Also you can keep them in your toolbox for fix itjobs around the house.
I would add a caution. When i tried to replace the globes on my last d2. The clock plastic that the glpbe sits in had become very brittle. I basically stiffed it. Be careful.
Otherwise, great tutorial.
