TD5 stuttering underload
Hi all, my 2001 TD5 auto is displaying the following symptoms: initial surging under load, now 'misfiring' when throttle depressed, has gone into limp home mode a number of times with engine idle but no throttle response until turned off and restarted (check engine light illuminates and then goes off).
I have checked: turbo hoses - not delaminated, wastegate - not siezed and can be moved, oil in loom (some but cleaned with contact cleaner and reassembled), no faults logged at mechanics, have cleaned the MAF, checked all hoses to wastgate modulator - no splits, no leaks from fuel regulator, fuel pump replaced in the last 2 years.
Of note - have not had M&S lights or gear selection in ODO for years (assume xyz switch died years ago) but this has never caused any running issues.
Auto serviced last week - revs strongly with no hesitation if in neutral or park, the above symtoms are when in gear. Does not appear to be speed related or at any parcticular revs.
I am baffled, any suggestions appreciated.

Bypass the wastegate modulator by joining the hose from the turbo outlet to the hose from the wastegate actuator and take for a drive.

Wastegate modulator would be my guess too. They are cheap to replace $40-50.

I have bypassed the wastegate modulator with the posted suggestion - no joy - still stuttering and engine light coming on. I guess it is the throttle position sensor, can hope there will be some fault codes to be read on Monday when I take back to my mechanic.
Thanks.

Have you disconnected the MAF and taken it for a drive?

Thanks - just went for a short drive with disconnected MAF, no change. I am baffled as to why it would idle normally and rev with out hesitation when not in gear but play up as soon as drive or reverse is selected. As per my first post have not had M&S lights or gear display for about 6 years ? SLABS computer, auto just serviced ? electrical connection disconnected but drove normally for the first few days.

So you have had no electrical connections to the box at all? No XYZ connected?or do you mean just no lights on the dash or gear selector display in dash? What about aoto selector lights on console?

No lights in the dash for M&S or selected gear in ODO, when I investigated this years ago when connected to diagnostics - the ECU was receiving the correct values from the auto and as the vehicle drove and responded normally was assumed to be an anommaly in my vehicle, so I never investigated any further (one less set of lights to worry about). I am only wondering now as to my current stuttering problem if a sensor or input from the auto has failed which is upsetting the ECU. I unfortunatley do not have an diagnostic equipment but when I had the vehicle scanned last week no faults were registered (although had the 3 amigos turned off - failed upper ball joint was leaving to much of an air gap which was registering as a sensor fault- no further problems since the ball joint replaced)
I know that the BCU provides the gear selected to the ODO and this remains suspect as my front windows have worked and not worked over the last few weeks, my mechanic has suggested a dry joint in the BCU and this will go on the to be fixed list.

Thanks for that info, Ok there is probably some fault , You just have no lights to see. Let us know how you go with it.
Cheers Scott

Thanks all for the advice, ended up being the throttle position sensor.
