    Age of Replacement TD5 engine?

I should have checked this months ago. I had to have my TD5 engine replaced at 153K.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out the age of the replacement, and in particular, if as it is suspected from serial numbers, older than my original 2004 version, whether it has plastic dowels or any other items of concern, given that the original idea of getting a MY04 was to circumvent as many problems as possible.
    Original engine - 16P25613A (MY04 D2a)
Replacement - 16P14190A (ex military Defender, age unknown, claimed 40K)
D4 MY16 TDV6 - Cambo towing magic, Traxide Batteries, X Lifter, GAP ID Tool, Snorkel, Mitch Hitch, Clearview Mirrors, F&R Dashcams, CB
RRC MY95 LSE Vogue Softdash "Bessie" with MY99 TD5 and 4HP24 transplants
SADLY SOLD MY04 D2a TD5 auto and MY10 D4 2.7 both with lots of goodies

Afaik the plastic dowels were a 10P issue. There is a tech bulletin with a changeover point listed but I'd have to check.

The actual dating vs engine number is not something I've been able to find anywhere although I am sure someone will have the information.

I had a MY03 D2A built Oct 02. It was very close to the end of the plastic dowel series (only a few hundered short IIRC - 1500 short according to the following post) with engine number 15P40nnnA.

    I was completely off.

Steel dowels were introduced at the following VIN's.

Discovery Series II: 3A793895 (build date: 22 October 2002) The VIN corresponds with the very last D2 to roll off the line on the 22nd, so effectively the 23rd.
    Defender: 3A647705 (build date: 23 Oct 2002)

Does anyone know if the change to steel dowels corresponds with the change from 15P to 16P engine prefixes?

    Hi Gavin

Your replacement engine has a serial number about 1700 higher than Charlie's. He was built in mid January 2003, so assuming serial numbers were allocated sequentially, I reckon your replacement engine would have been built around the same time, or a little later.

    A good question Paul

To narrow it down my D2a has a 16p engine.

    Cheers

    Engine Numbers

The 10P engine was fitted to 1999-2001MY vehicles. This engine complied with EU2 emissions regulations.

The 15P and 16P engines were fitted from 2002MY onwards and had changes to make the engines comply with EU3 emissions regulations.

15P/16P engine had the following changes:

    - piston combustion bowl offset
    - injector pressure increased from 1000kpa to 1500kpa
    - injector stroke increased
    - rocker shaft and rocker specifications changed to accommodate longer injector stroke
    - Timing gear and timing chain upgrade to cope with higher injection loads
    - EGR cooler added
    - revised Fuel pressure regulator
    - external pipe for fuel return replacing a gallery cast into the head
    - Reflashable ECU

I'm sure there are other differences but those are the main ones.

    cheers
    Paul
