Thread: TD5 Intercooler Upgrade D2 to D2a

Yes it should be a straight bolt up job. This seems a common upgrade around here.

The only catch may be fitting a manual cooler to an auto car as the auto's have a cooler for the auto underneath the intercooler. Not sure if this would be a problem as I haven't heard of issues but I suspect it may.

I believe this is only an issue in the UK. All Australian delivered vehicles use the smaller automatic transmission cooler as even the manuals were fitted with an oil cooler below due to the hotter climate.

I have a bigger auto cooler from Davis Performance Landies. I fitted up a D2a intercooler to my '99 with no dramas. Well I did get the wife to start some of the hidden bolts with her fingers because my sausage fingers would not fit. You probably wouldnt have this problem without the bigger auto cooler.

And just as an aside, what stupid, inane ***** designed the D2 so that to remove the intercooler, you have to basically dismantle the entire front of the car and take out about 30 bolts. What a tool . It could have been sooo easy but no, it was probably a monday morning and the design team thought - "You know what? Lets make this hard so that DIY people get the irrits!"

Yep, I can see all. Back in 1996-7 the design team were sitting around a table brain storming on an idea scribbled on a white board. This idea would be the key driving factor behind a Discovery for the new Millennium.

I did that upgrade. Bolted straight in. Have a spare just in case i hit something ( roo). I figured while i had the front apart i might as well. Its about 30% more surface area. Its just a PITA to get too.
I dont have a chip in mine but figure it cant hurt to have a cooler charge going into the engine to help lower the temps.

So would the upgrade be worth doing if I don't want a new chip or just give the old one a clean?
