    Td5 temp gauge dropping

Ok, just flew home tonight from the pilbara for my week off. The family picked me up in the disco from the airport. I drove home an noticed the temp gauge dropping a bit. Didn't think much about it until we got home and thought I better look it up on the forum. Low and behold there is a hundred different posts on it.

Does the gauge dropping mean my thermostat isn't closing ?

I already have a engine saver on after I blew a coolant hose a while back. Looks like I need to invest in a madman ems 1 too, oh and a nanocom, and... And..

I was hoping the remap was going to be next on the list, maybe not...

Can the experts point me in the right direction please in regards to the dropping gauge, is it still ok to drive or will I do damage ? I think I will start by testing the engine saver is still working ok in the morning.

    Hello,
I had the same problem once and it was due to low water level as the temp sender is on the head and no water means the temp drops on the gauge, I could be wrong. I have Evo and live quite near you, you are welcome to come and have a check if you like or load you new map upgrade.

    Hi Craig,

I had this problem a while ago. It turned out there was nothing wrong with the cooling system at all.

The gauge dropped as the wiring to the temp sender was frayed near the top LH side corner of the cyl head. Remove your engine cover and carefully check the wiring in the brittle plastic conduit in this area.

You could also consult the rave elect. section to measure the sender and wiring resistance.

    Cheers

Had the same issue, temp would be normal while on the hwy, then slow to go through a town and it would drop. Thermostat was stuck open.

Hi Ian, thanks for the generous offer. I will have a squizz under the bonnet this morning and then go from there. So I will be in touch, I guess pm would be the best way to contact you. I am off till Monday morning when I fly back to site. What day and times would work for you, for me to come over and say hi and check it out with your evo?

Thanks dswatts, seems a common one so will look up rave and check it out.

I have it on desktop but would be much easier on my ipad, I'm sure there's a thread somewhere on how to get rave onto ipad. I don't have my cd anymore, lost it in a house move or two. Another thread search coming up....

I had this happen on my D1 just recently. I took the old one out and it was fully closed. I bought a new thermostat and put them both on the stove in a pot of water. The old one opened around 65 degrees, whereas the new one started opening at 82 like it should. So the old one was still opening and closing, but at completely the wrong temperature. So if you take it out, you need to actually check it's operating correctly.

Or even better, take it out and just put a new one in anyway. My genuine brand D1 thermostat was about $16. No point doing anything but just replacing at that price. Very simple DIY job (assuming TD5 is similar). Just make sure you get the new rubber seal with the thermostat.

lol I feel like I jinx'd that assuming it would be easy. I've changed 2 thermostats - 300TDI and 4BD1 - both were a piece of cake. But you know what they say about assumptions!!!
