New tyres, shocks, steel bumper - HELP!!

I have a 1999 Disco 2 TD5, bog standard (no SLS or ACE, standard 16 inch alloys and 235/70/16 tyres). I have a bull bar, steel roof rack (basket type) and heavy duty tow bar.

It is used mainly as a commuter but take my kids camping - dirt tracks, some beach use.

The tyres will need replacing soon, I am looking at a 2 inch suspension lift, and the plastic rear bumper has deteriorated. Being in the army, I have friends who can assist me, however any changes made need to pass inspection on changing registration when the inevitable posting order is struck and we are sent anywhere in Oz.

I have spent hours on the forum, being educated and confused in equal parts. The questions I have are:

    * 2 inch suspension lift - recommended kit with ease of installation?
    * Tyres - retaining the existing 16 inch alloy rims, don't want to have to change the wheel carrier - best tyre height? recommended ATR (LT)
    * Craddock Steel Rear Bumper (DA5646) - have been quoted 280 pounds delivered to Townsville (approx AU$450) - any one had any problems fitting or quality issues?

I intend on keeping the old girl for some time (done 220,000km so far) but do not need to go with the 'rolls royce' solution... best value for money.

Hopefully the info is useful... love the forum, spend hours reading, but I just needed to drag some of the threads together. If you have made it this far I really appreciate it... thanks for your help!

    Hey mate,
I've got a '00 TD5 that I bought with a 2" lift already installed and 245/75r16 Coopers on. My tip is with regards to your spare wheel carrier, 245/75r16 will clear... just. That's what I've got anyways. For what I do which is a heap of highway driving and then occasional off road jaunts, this size is ideal.

Lift kit? There'll be guys with much more experience than me, my tip would be a simple 2" springs and shocks should be fine.

    Ben.

I'm running 245/70 R16 with no problems mounting on the spare type carrier. They are LT Cooper AT3's. been on the car for about 17k with no probs.

Can't comment on the suspension lift, I'm running standard height.

The bumper part number is a britpart one and looks mighty similar to one I was looking at before stumbling on a NOS Kaymar rear bumper towbar recently. If so it is pretty well made. Price you have been quoted is pretty good. Local costs were about $600ish from memory.

    Cheers

    G'day,
I've got a '00 TD5. Its got a 2" lift, which means it hits the bump stops much less often on carpark speedhumps. I run LT245/75R16 Maxxis Bighorn mud tyres, & they clear the bumper on the standard wheel carrier.
My rear bumper went the same way as yours, & I fabricated my own steel rear bar using 90x90x3 RHS. Total cost, not counting welding wire & my time was under $100. Not the neatest welding, but very satisfying
    Cheers,
    Alex

    My preference would be;

    • 2" Suspension Lift using Bilstein 994 & 995 shocks with Dobinson or King Coils (I have Dobinson coils) Easy to fit yourself too.

    • 245/75 R17 LT Tyre, I have had Maxxis MT's and now use Kumho's (but in a bigger size)

    • Any steel rear bar designed for them really.
If you have any issues with the clearance on the rear wheel carrier you can invert the carrier and get some more clearance.

I'm going through the same thing re: suspension.
For tyres I'm running 245/75/16 BFG KM2s I love these tyres great on the dirt and I haven't had any issues with them on the road. I did have to flip the rear wheel carrier to fit the spare, we'll it did fit (kind of) with out the flip but there was excessive rubbing...
I'd be interested how you go with the rear bar as mine will need replacing soon enough....

    Cheers Ben

I have been trying to get hold of these guys for a delivery quote (Cairns) but got no where. How did you manage to get a response from them?

My D2 has SLS. I fitted the front with standard duty Dobinson springs (+2 inch) and Bilstein shocks (+2 inch) all round. I changed the tyres to 265/75/R16 Cooper ST's and turned the wheel carrier upside down ( a dead easy job by the way).

I have since fitted a TJM bullbar as it was the cheapest way to replace the bumper which was destroyed in a car park. This has caused my standard Dobinsons springs to sag about an inch. However when I hook up the camper trailer the springs come back up about an inch.

I think I got the springs and shocks from Suspension Stuff.
