STUCK - new viscous fan bearing wont go in any further

A question for the fitters out there - or anyone experienced in these matters.

ive just bout finished putting the bearing back in the viscous fan. I had the new bearing and shaft in the freezer overnight, i heated the bearing flange (a little) and the bearing knocked in easily, then jammed solid...... just too far out to get the cir-clip in.

how can i knock / press this in a little further ?

or do i have to start again? Bearing in mind that this is my daily driver and its a public today - grrrr

Wish you luck on that one. I've got no idea.
Are you doing this without removing the timing cover ?

I suspect that you are talking about a TD5, I have gone and got an image to confirm. It looks like it is the case.

The expansion rate of aluminium is greater than steel, apply heat to the front cover with a gas torch and tap the bearing in the rest of the way. You will have to get access to the bearing as tapping on the viscous shaft is not a good idea as it will possibly damage your bearing.

    Where about are you?

Cheers Slug, yes TD5 on a D2, ill give it another try with a bit more heat. Not a lot of room to tap it in with the radiator in still place though.

If you cannot tap it then you will have to rig up a mini press. You could use the four upper most bolt holes to anchor some all-thread then use some bits of steel to give rig up a way to press down on the bearing.

If you don't have the means by which to improvise a press/puller then I expect that you will need to get some assistance or start getting the radiator out of the way to give you more room.

    GOT IT!

I screwed the flange back on the shaft. I think the shaft had pushed out of the bearing and was bottoming out against the engine block. A bit more heat - I think i was a little timid with it the first time, and I was able to tap it home.

Thanks all. It's all up and running smoothly, can't say that about the old bearing though, not a bit of grease left in it.

Looks like I might have found my next job..... Harmonic balancer / dampener. A bit too much movement in it i think but ill put that in another post later.

    Well done.

I think the harmonic balancer is bit of a difficult job to get the bolt off. Starter motor and long lever I recall.
