When in M&S (limp mode) the box is stuck in only a single gear.
It sounds like your service mob are right.
I have a problem with the automatic gearbox on my 2000 Discovery 2 td5.
When accelerating the revs flare and the car jerks, it does eventually go into gear but i cant accelerate 100% without it screwing up
I have had the autobox serviced and they told me it would likely need replacing.
but... The gearbox just went into limp mode, you know with the M and S lights flashing and it drove smooth again - i thought it was a mechanical problem but this makes me to think its something electrical.
The M & S lights only came on for 1 drive and now they are off again and the problem is back.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated, any ideas?

Fairly sure it was changing gears, it accelerated fine to 100kmh
May also be worth checking the red ECU plug for oil
If the lights behind the P N D 3 2 1 (usually red), are not lighting up, I'd put money on the little gear selector lock-out that's mounted up high on the passenger side of the box. It stops the ignition starting if not in neautral or park amongst other things. I can't remember the name of it (may have been inhibiter). It has to line up correctly or you do get all the symptoms you're describing. Mine got cracked and the PCB went.
I also had the same problem with my wife's car being a 2001 D2.
If your car has not had the Xy switch ( inhibitor switch) on the passenger side of the transmission replaced I would get that checked first.
This is a common problem that is now showing up with the D2 because the drain point for the air conditioner is directly above this switch and the water always finds it's way in to corrode the micro switch inside.
Also check the universal joints in the double cardon joint in the front tailshaft for rust and wear because the second of the air conditioner drain points drips on to the cardon joint.
There is a post on the forum to silicone and clamp 8mm ID rubber hose to the air conditioner drain points.

Hi chappelle . I would check the red plug at the ECU for oil first . Check the auto box oil level . Did it get better or worse with the service? . You could put a bottle of Lucas Trans Fix in it and see if it helps ..that would isolate the problem a bit more . Could be a dying auto clutch pack or maybe sticky valves . Won't do any harm either and may buy you some time . .

this is a bit of a an old thread now but my problem is still occuring.
I have tried to put in some lucas trans fix and that doesnt seem to of helped, still just the same...
The revs still flare when its changing up gears.
I dont think its the xyz switch all the display on the dash and the shifter seem normal.
I hasn't gone into limp mode since i last posted.
I did find my intake hose was cracked where it clamps onto the turbo, likely an air leak there, would that effect it?
ECU plug looks all good.
