 rear diff

Had the seals and O-rings replaced in the transfer the other day the mechanic found the rear diff was leaking as well so he replaced the diff seal as well----he also told me that the shaft on the rear diff [output I presume ] was not straight he replaced the seal anyway. What could cause the shaft to be at an angle? I've had problems before with the rear diff seal and when it was replaced the mechanic forgot to tighten the bolts on the tail shaft and only realised on the test drive that something was wrong! Well anyone out there with words of wisdom

Not straight? As in the output or pinion shaft is bent? It is unusual for a pinion to get bent. Haviving said that it is not impossible. If a tailshaft fails at speed the resulting carnage can bend it, Coming down hard on an object( rock, log, etc ) offroading can do it. The only fix is replacement of shaft and bearings in diff.
