Air Filter Grill/Vent Placement

Yeah, wading IS fun:D when done in a defender or a 2A with NO :o bloody carpets and 'lectrickery to have to dry out afterwards! In a Discovery with carpets, underfelt,cloth seating,electric doohickies at floor level? No Thank you! Unless I have to on pain of not getting any for a month :p And dont tell me the door seals are good, 'Cause it has LandRover in BIG letters across the bonnet :D not to mention the gaps in the bottom seals...........
I have crossed bonnet deep with the Deefer, and got shifted downstream 2 meters once due to a hole I never found in the walk! Scary stuff :o Water, fast or slow , has caught and punished many foolhardy souls and is not to be sneezed at.

I've raised my electrical doohickies :D They're now high enough that if they're submerged I've got more pressing issues.

Honestly, the only time mine leaks is if I stick a pressure washer in the gaps. Other than that it's dry as a bone, except for a small dribble from the perished rubber bung in the NS firewall. I haven't even gotten around to upgrading the door seals, mainly because I hate sikaflex :D
Perhaps I should take it to the dealers and ask why my factory shoe cleaner isn't working.

Staying on topic though, honestly I think the best way of stopping dust ingress is a snorkel with a pre-cleaner.
Having said that, I've heard of a total of 3 Td5s being dusted and every one I've seen lets rubbish through the airbox so they obviously don't mind too much.
Might have a look at the airbox tomorrow and see what can be done about stopping some of the problem there.

Yep snorkel is the way for me. I can understand why people dont want to spoil the lines of their pride and joy, but honestly, after a week its like, snorkel? what snorkel? Cutting the gaurd? Now thats scary!:o Still have nightmares of what could have happened :D
Dusting the motors? I know of 2 actual dust ingress, 1 poorly fitted filter and another a dodgy airbox. I know of 1 turbo destroyed because of dust loading the filter to choke point. That was a result of dealers not allowing for the fact the owner spent most of his time on unsealed roads.

I read in a thread the other day someone saying that they thought Td5s had a rep for the filters basically choking up to the point where the intake basically sucked them in partially which broke whatever poor seal there was and allowed unfiltered air into the engine, which killed it.
Certainly I've never heard of anything like that happening :eek:

That's really the only vital one, as stated earlier if you're getting water up to levels much greater than the middle of the cubby box in the cabin then it's time to start searching for a new car.

I fitted one of these, and a boilermaker mate of mine is making me an attachment to bring the pipe to vertical, for the fitment of Donaldson pre filter, for dust. Happy so far, fitting it yourself means you know for sure everything is sealed correctly. [ not my vehicle in the photo] Bob
