    Need new discs- grooved??

I checked my brakes when servicing yesterday and I need new discs F and R soon as well as pads. At 140Kk I have a massive ridge front and back. The rear pads are Delphi and seem OK.

My question is has anyone had experience with grooved and or drilled front discs and recommendations for brands of pads.

I have had EBC black ones on my RRC and was very disappointed in them and then I had cheapo mintex from UK on the rear and they seemed good.

My major concern is of course squeal and noise affecting the ABS sensors and the operation of traction control, as it IMHO you need a "soft" type pad to give the best traction control result and no squeal ( I don't know this I am guessing) . But what about the clackity noise from grooved discs?
    Regards Philip A
BTW I am thinking of grooved and/or drilled discs as I tow an unbraked camper that weighs 550Kg tare. The EBC on my RRC actually pushed through the anti squeal plastic coating as to me they were too "hard".

Slotted rotors work well but drilled rotors are prone to cracking on 4wds. I've had both dba and rda discs over the years and both are fine.

I lost my previous reply. Hmmm.

    Rotors
EBC slotted were fine, a longer life than OE but less slow power.
OE had frat bite but short lived
DBA great bite and long lived - my choice.

    Pads
EBC green 2000 series were awesome. Little dust, totally quiet very powerful, lived well and the hotter they got the better they worked and you could give them heaps. But, you pretty much can't get them now although they were the benchmark.
Bendix 4wd pads. A bit behind the EBC 2000 for performance, dust is good and they are quiet, very long lived - my choice because EBC 2000 are no longer available.
OE performed well, but outrageously dusty.
Lucas/TRW performed ok but very noisy
EBC 6000 series perform ok, quiet, reasonably dust free but they fade very easily, too easily actually and I wouldn't ever consider them if you tow where I think they are just plain dangerous. I have had virtually total brake fade with these and have pulled up only just on the handbrake with smoking brakes. Not recommended.
    Cheers

I've recently fitted DBA 4X4 Survival Series rotors front and rear. Very happy with the quality and performance. I paid $330 for the front and I think about the same for the rears. They are grooved and have the 'Kangaroo Paw' venting but only the venting on the front unfortunately.
I fitted some generic pads from Auto One until I can get my hands on some Bendix pads. I have been searching for the EBC pads recommended by Slunnie but to no avail.
I have also fitted 2 inch extended stainless steel hose as well.
    Cheers

I've got the DBA T2 "Street Series" slotted rotors all round on mine with LR Pads. I concur with Slunnie on the LR pads - they work well but generate a lot of brake dust.

FWIW the DBA "4x4 Survival Series" and "Street Series" slotted discs for the D2 are the same thing except for the box.

    cheers

RDA also sell a set of slotted and dimpled. Unlike crossdrilled, the dimples are not drilled all the way through which reduces the likelyhood of cracking. I have these fitted back and front on mine. They are also gold passive plated or some gimik like that which has kept them looking shiny...

    Consider this guy.

High performance rotors and clutches // RapidRS.com.au

He claims that most of the Aussie sold and claimed Aussie made stuff is from China made blanks. So they all use the same steel.

I think his name is Brett from memory. I bought a full set of rotors for my WRX about 12 months ago. I was very happy with them.

I think a lot of rotor life and performance has a lot to do with how they are run in. I would always use a very soft pad to run them in and then change to a harder performance pad. The Ferrodo DS2500 (race only only sold by specialized suppliers) were excellent after the first couple of pushes. I always knew the brakes would not be so good through the first couple of round abouts as I left home but I was never pushing it as the engine was still cold. The DS2500 were rated at 200 degrees to 700.

I changed to a different metal pad with higher percentage of metal and were far better when stone cold but still rated to 750 degrees. When I made the change the rotors still had plenty left but the higher metal component pads chewed them up within 5000km.

I think you have to choose between the pads or the rotor wearing. I have noticed from watching night time races I would previously see rotors glowing red from heat. These days I see sparks flying out of the rims but no glowing rotors. I think brakes have changed from just pads getting changed to the wear being shared between rotors and pad. In the old days a rotor would last 100,000km plus. These days with a higher performance pad that will risist fad and deal with ABS and higher braking loads a rotor can be gone in 25,000 or even less in a vehicle that sees the odd track day.

    Happy Days.

Yes thanks I have him in my watch list.
I just bought Bendix front and Ferodo rear pads.( I always think of The Ring)
I will get the discs when I get back from South America.

Just be aware there are Ferodo and there is Ferodo.

One series can be bought at repco and SCA and the like. The other can only be bought through specialized brake shops like "Competition Friction"

    Happy Days.
