    help breakdown

A friend of mine has just phoned me as his td5 manual 2000 disco has broken down in Wilcannia NSW.
I have hired a car trailer to go and bring him back to Geelong.
He described the noise his engine is making as a sound like a drum stick beating a drum. It varies with revs.
Do any of you learned gents & ladies have any ideas as to what the problem is or could be.
He has been told a split piston........... Any thoughts.
    Cheers Nick.

split piston? I thought only 202 holden reds did that But if it sounds like a drum it aint good! More likely a holed piston or a leg outa bed , or a valve, or .......my fingers have gone RSI!

    Has it stopped?
    Will it start?
    Did it over heat?
    Leaks?
    How was it before hand?

(HOPE) Most likely the injector harness, if so he can sort this with minimal tools on the spot.....well enough to get into a town that has a new harness.

A better description than sounding like a "stick in a drum" would help

    breakdown

It is still running. He told me he was cruising down the road after his trip up to Roma. and said that it just started making this tapping sound like a stick on a drum.
He pulled over at once and had it idling at said when he revved it the "drumming " increased with the revs.
I know it does not sound like a very technical report but this is how I got it over the phone.
No overheating no leaks.just running along at about 90 kms knowing him and it starting this strange noise.
No mechanics in Wilcannia and $1000.00 to tow home to Geelong (after RACV) discounts!

Can he take the auxiliary drive belt off? might help eliminate/ find a problem in that area, at least. Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

He should try calling NRMA and joining on the phone. You pay a surcharge of $80 on the premium cover cost so all up about 250.

If you pay the surcharge they come out straight away and if more than 100k from home they will tow it home.

    breakdown

I have just arrived back home after a 2276 kilometer drive with a trailer.
Half of the trip with another Disco on the trailer.
I think Scarry is correct about the harmonic balancer.
I had my doubts about my untried auto 1999 d2 td5.
I am now in awe of the auto box and the car's ability.
I left Lethbridge 0930 Thursday and having spent two nights in motels, one very good in Mildura and one not so good on the first night in Broken Hill.
I got home this evening before dark.
With cruise control and the auto box the journey was a snap.
I now have tomorrow to rest before work on Monday.
The roads in NSW are much better than those in Victoria.
I was happy to make Broken Hill in one day from near Geelong with a 0930 start.
The journey would have been much harder in other types of 4X4 I feel.Nick

Hope it is only the HB

Only a guess,i am no mech but have had a few d2s.

You are correct they drive fantastically, until people actually own one they have no idea how good they are.

And the D4 is even better.....

A mate of mine works at ARB and drives numerous types of vehicles, mainly customers jap vehicles. He took my D4 for a spin last week and was amazed how well it drove, and it has the 'small' engine.

    Hope it works out OK.

Yes, thanks Scarry. Time will tell. He has another car to drive for now.
I expect he will rest for a day or so and then get stuck in.
I have just bought a Nanocom but it is still in the mail. Not sure it would help with an external mechanical problem , if that is what it is though.
Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.
    Regards Nick.
