Gear select cable on Disco TD5
Hello all,
I recently purchased a Disco 2 TD5 (2001 & very high mileage), and only joined this site a couple of days ago. As expected, the car has a few typical LR issues (oil leaks, electric window issues & loose trim) which I am in the process of addressing. However, my daily runner blew a head gasket about a week ago, so the Landy has been promoted to my commuter vehicle sooner than I would have liked.
We went for a drive in the Otway National Park, and on the return leg the auto gear selector failed. On inspection, whatever should be on the end of the selector cable (attached to the gear mechanism) was missing. I was able to llie under the vehicle and manually push the selector lever into 'Drive' whilst my wife sat in the vehicle with the engine running and her foot hard on the brake, but she does not see this as a viable 'long term solution', especially as I leave for work at 6:00am.
I ordered the service manuals for it a few days ago, but they are not due to arrive for a while.
Therefore, I am looking for a 'quick fix' (preferably a proven one) which may be able rectify the issue whilst I try to source a permanent resolution. I'm guessing the local dealer / garage will not have a part on the shelf.
Any help you good offer would be very appreciated.
Thanks to all, and I look forward to some advice.
Cheers, Tony

Take a look in this thread about aligning the switch, it'll give you an idea of what was there before it fell off. Not sure about a shortcut fix as it will have to move the lever in the exact way required in order to get the switch and gear selector working well together and avoid any error codes being thrown in the auto ecu.
