Land Rover Parts - 17: BOLT (M12 x 30) - CROWN WHEEL PINION - R/ROVER
Hi all. I found the source of the crunching and grinding I was hearing from the rear diff... A bolt had snapped off on the crownwheel and was free floating, making some horrible noises. Diff is 345k old. No damage to any of the gears etc.
Should I replace all the bolts? What are the torque settings for them (workshop manual does not show it) Any idea where to get them? Microcat evidently does not show them.
Thanks
Regards, Will

Thanks, was thinking of replacing them all if I can find them, and at a reasonable price.
The link you posted is to Disco 1 bolts. The D2 bolt is shorter and has knurling on the mating face to act as a lock, as shown in the pics... It seems that their part number is FTC5150, with a torque setting of 60nm

Replace them all...
while your buying the bolts buy a thread chaser of the same thread to ensure that all the threads that your bolting into are still sound.
I got my last lot of diff bolts from GM Bolt but they are up here in Queensland.

Is this the kind of thing you mean? Hand Tap Chrome Alloy 3/8" UNF - Classic Fasteners
A quality 3/8 UNF intermediate thread tap?

more like that but yes an intermediate tap will do, just be very careful with starting the tap if the thread is damaged if you misalign the tap or mis seat it on the damaged thread you can wind up in a world of hurt.

Great info Dave, thanks a lot. Any idea where to get a 3/8 UNF thread chaser? I can't imagine it'd be a common stock item...

they will most likely have your bolts too.
any decent tools shop will have them, Ive even seen them at bunnings.
Most good nut and bolteries will also have them (GM bolt and Nutz and boltz are my two local suppliers of all things thready)

Thanks guys, I know A&A well. I'm concerned about using non genuine bolts. Are there any issues with doing this? I don't want to cause clearance issues etc.
