overheating problem help
hi
ive recently rebuilt the engine in my 4 litre disco 2 which included rings, bearings, honing, new gaskets, water pump, tensioners, thermo and radiator. we also replaced the small top hose from the radiator that runs to the reservoir tank as it broke with heater hose and ran it across the top of the engine.
it ran great however we noticed a slight release of pressure from the reservoir cap. when i got the new one we put the old rubber seals on it as it didnt come with them. it was the same pressure of 140.
since we put the cap on when it was driven for the day and sat to cool the hoses would start to collapse. if you undid the tank cap it would release the pressure. i also tried to bleed it which made it better. it then drove well for a few days until it got home one day and dumped the coolant from the reservoir through the overflow i believe as i couldnt find a leak. i also believe my temp gauge is blown as it doesnt move above half.
the missus also spotted a leak under the passenger side from somewhere but it keeps eluding us.
anyone have any thoughts on all this at all i just cant figure it out
cheers dan

Do you mean you got a new reservoir cap and it did not have any seals in it? If that is the case I would be sending it back as it should have new in it. Faulty sealing caps can cause overheating. The temp gauge not moving is in all probability normal, Temp gauges are notorious for moving only after the engine has boiled dry!!
The hoses starting to collapse as the motor cools points again to a faulty cap! As the motor heats it is pushing coolant out then creating a vacuum as it cools . As to where V8's leak specifically I am hazy as I have ............A TD5!!
but all the normal suspects like loose clamps, welch/core plugs , corroded spigots should all be checked. Or it was the air con drain?

For a leak look at your Throttle body gasket, but this is on top of the engine, passenger side so would of thought you'd notice it.
Change the cap first an see what happens.

Yep I reckon it's the cap as it started when I put it on. As for throttle body that has been bypassed so no issues there anymore. Thanks guys.
