Buying a D2a with no service history

I'm going to look at a D2a v8 tomorrow with just on 103,000km on the clock, owned by an older guy for the last 5-6 years. The owner says it has been serviced regularly and has just had a major service done recently.
But it had no log books when he purchased it and he only has receipts for the last couple of services.
On the plus side it looks to be in immaculate condition and is priced right.

I'm reasonably mechanically minded and are aware of some common problems that go wrong and would steer clear if it didn't run, sound and drive perfect, but with no service history I know I'm taking a gamble...... Am I crazy?

Maybe wise if you know somebody with Hawkeye or Nanocom, to ask if you can borrow it.

Look for tell tale signs of leaking coolant, and listen for ticking or knocking from the engine. Make sure the engine is cold when you get there.

I bought mine on e bay unseen, no service record. Got it checked and major serviced which has paid for itself well 2 years on. One failure, top hose oh and a condenser fan.

If you do go a head I'd highly recommend getting a diagnostic tool for it, this too has paid for its self in the year I have had it.

I have done a lot of preventative maintainance to keep it trouble freeish. I watch it very closely.

No your not mad, just approach it with eyes wide open

    Cheers Jerry

Yes for sure. I've budgeted $2-3k for preventive maintenance if I go ahead with it.

Take for a drive and if you feel like you'd be happy owning it arrange to get it inspected by a LR specialist. An inspection by someone who works on D2's on a regular basis will ensure you know what you are getting yourself in to - even if the vehicle has a stamped log book.

I've looked at a D3 this week that apparently has had 1000's spent on it by the dealer trying to move it on. Took a mate back to have a look over it and he pointed out so many things the salesman asked us to leave as there was no way he said the deal would be going ahead if he had to fix what's was found.

A service history proves oil changes have been done if its just the log book you have, go by what you see and feel - its also better to see a car at someone's home, gives you an idea about how they look after other things.

The way I'm looking at it is its a car that's 10yrs old now and if its been cared for and fussed over on the outside than 95% sure it's had the same treatment on the inside, as far as servicing goes.
I've seen cars in the past that have been neglected over there life and the owner thinks a professional detailing job will right all that......You just can't hide years of neglect.

ask if it been serviced by himself or a mechanic. if a mechanic, get the mech's details and give him a call.

Well I took a look at this D2 HSE today and with no service history it had to be exceptional to move to the next step.
It's had the instrument cluster replaced and the odometer is flashing at 61,000km. The seller reckons it's done 20 more than that but there was a few other clues about this car that I recognise... I've seen this car before some time back on eBay and from memory it had done around 200k.

Well with no history and a dodgy odometer I think I'll give it a miss...

Yep, dodgy is an understatement. If it was serviced at a land rover dealership at any time in it's life the records would most likely be retained.

Sounds like someone has been attempting to fudge the clock.

I think even picking up a d2a with only 103 is a rare find.

    Regards
    Andrew
