    Windscreen price RACQ for D2

I got stuck behind a truck with the tonneau covers spilling crap everywhere a few weeks back, monday, and got a few chips, and a hazy effect. One chip decided to run this morning, so dropped into RACQ workshop at Lawnton.

The fella said that they would like it to be in the shop as they need 2 guys, and need to remove the bonnet. As mine isnt a genuine screen (I have 1 free windscreen a year) they need to fit an after market in, but will replace the trim up the top of screen for free.

He also found both side column trims that are loose-ish, which are not covered, and may be just clips, or the whole trim could be damaged inside.

Since Mrs WingsOfToa is one of the head honchos of RACQ, I got a price for a genuine screen, both side column panels, and top trim fitted for $240.

Is a genuine screen worth paying the dollars for? Or should I just claim my non genuine screen and pay for the clips, or trims if need?

The price sounds good, and he sounds like a good guy, but am now wondering if I pay for a genuine, then next screen replaced can then be fitted genuine for free.

    What do ya reckon?

Genuine all the way. The difference between them is massive. And that is a very cheap price for a genuine screen.

I never had any issues with the aftermarket heated screen on my D2a, but I have heard stories of them leaking because they didn't fit well, but I wonder if they just weren't installed well.

Also, sometimes you can get an aftermarket that is pilkington brand, which is OE, but just without the land rover oval.

Looks like there has been some miscommunication (im sure I heard genuine). Price is 500 bux for genuine.

Ive just got off the blower and these are the things I was told, if anyone can relay whether I am being spun yarns would be good, as my wife can sort these issues out.

Firstly the timeline is about right Yorkie, 3 weeks ish for a UK delivery. Unfortunately I dont want to risk having a windscreen on my lap, so am getting a GJames one tomorrow morning.

This is what I was told: Land Rover dont make screens anymore, (not sure if its just for the Disco or all others). They take them to a glass mob in the UK that has the stamp, and an aftermarket is kilned and then fitted out of factory.

Secondly: The aussie ones ie: "aftermarket" are just as good as genuine as they meet aussie standards, I asked whether they met Land Rover standards, but couldnt get a definate answer.

I did make sure that the people I was dealing with, understood who they were talking to, and that I am fussy with my cars, and am happy to pay for better quality, (please dont think im trying to bignote myself) its not my intention.

So can anyone confirm or deny what ive been told for future reference? RACQ is a great motoring club, (looking forward to getting our gold membership in 20 something years), and I just want to know whether the information im getting is correct

have a search on here, in particular "fluids" posts from last year.
the original glass is pilkington opticool, now google that.
i just told youi the land rover glass is better for sealing and a/c operation so i wanted original, they agreed.

Ive been a bit of a pain to the boys at the windscreen shop. But theyve guaranteed that the aftermarket im getting has to meet worldwide UV ratings, and is not a thinner glass. Its exactly the same as LR specs. I won't know anyway I guess as mine is aftermarket, and ive been happy with it.

I dont have the luxury of waiting, as the crack dosnt feel right to me, so needs to be done.

Apparently Land Rover used initially a mob called XXX or triple X, then swapped over to Pilks after hassles.

That is correct, Pilkington is the maker of the genuine artical under the "Opticool" name. The tint on opticool is said to make the sensor for the aircon( the little blackish Daleck head in the middle of the dash) work properly. Try sticking some tape or cover it up and feel how that affects the little sucker! Mine is a non gen screen and I have seen it beside another D2 with a gen screen and mine is much lighter tint . It will be very unlikely that your screen will "cave in" on you! Unless the crack is through both glass layers and even then most unlikely . If you can I would hold off for the real deal.

Bugga, now im really confused. Thanks though Scott:-)

If this sensor is an issue, then I will get the screen fitted, and argue the point later.

I was told a few hours ago that the screen im getting is 781bux. Land Rover one was 520, and an Optikool one was 960bux..
