Hi tony.
M6 1.25 fine thread
Yes you can use a longer bolt as it is actually threaded the whole way through the housing. For a quick fix people have also been known to put a cable tie through to keep it closed.
Hope you get it sorted.

Did an oil change last weekend and all seemed ok till I was tightening the bolts on the cent oil filter. One felt as tho I was about to strip it(maybe had just stripped, that horrible in between stage) so I stopped.
I pulled up at my grandson's school today and when I got back to the truck (1 hour later) there is a pool of oil underneath. Thinking of the suss bolt I go straight to the said bolt and sure enough its decided to take a holiday in what it thinks is the Bahamas!
So my first question is can anyone tell me the correct size of the said bolt and where I could get one on a Saturday morning (ok 2 questions).
More importantly would the thread depth of the bolt closest to the engine allow a longer bolt or am I knackered(assuming I have stripped it)?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Tony

Where are you?
The best bet is to fit a helicoil as the thread is shot. It's not too hard.
If you are near the "Shire" I can help.
Land Rover - The leader in chasis rust protection with leading edge oil application system.![]()
2000 Discovery TD5 - ACE. 2" Lift and Bloody big lights
2016 Discovery D4 SDV6 HSE ARB Bar, lights and winch. Wow
I had mine go in Broome on a service. Popped to the local bolt shop, got same thread and twice as long with a nut. Bolt pokes thru with nut on the bottom. Sweet. Quick, cheap an easy. It's not as if you change he centrifugal filter every 5000kms.
X2 that. I wouldn't bother with a helicoil, too much hassle. When the same happened to me I was going flat out. But as said a cable tie will get you going again, it's the o ring that makes the seal. Stupid design that thing it should have captive bolts / studs or some type of clip. Very common for them to give up the ghost after even a slight over tighten.
Thankyou everyone, I am back on the road
I have one secure bolt and one cable tie as a temporary fix until I do a more permanent job tomorrow.
Like so many others I would be lost without this forum!!!
Cheers
Tony
