    Alternator TD5

Hi all. I done some searching and have not found what I was looking for.

Anyway Had a reg on the td5 alternator fail some time back and purchased a cheep copy alternator off e bay to replace it. All has been well but I find it now will only charge to 13.2 volts. This leaves my batteries half charged. So I have ordered a new reg from the UK off e bay.

But was wondering has anyone fitted a differant reg to these alternators like a FE55. Seems a waste to spend $750 for whole alternator when all that is wrong is the reg.

    Cheers.

    Hello roverfj1200,

I fitted one of those regulator and brush kits a few months ago.

A bit of a fiddle to get the alternator in and out, I think I replaced some O-rings on the oil lines as well.

Not a problem so far.....all seems good.(can't say that I've checked the voltage/charge of the battery though)

    Cheers,

    Jason

the only possible issue I can see is that the chinese copy alternator may not take the brush and reg kit. I have seen many of these copy alternators binned out of warranty because there are no replacement bits. Happened to me with a Denso copy alt, looked the same but when the reg failed out of warranty I discovered the reg wasn't available because it wasn't a genuine or mainstream Denso Alt.....

I have cut the reg out of other alternators before. One on my FJ1200. And fitted the FE55. I will take a look at it and see how that may fit. Would be a easy fiix for a what seem is a common problem.

    Cheers
