    Replacement Auto transmission

Hey guys. I gave my disco to my brother whilst I cruise around the Himalayas for a few months. Unfortunately he's managed to melt the auto transmission for me. His local (canberra) mechanic at Canberra Motor Works says its basically wrecked and will need replacement.
He looked around and found a wrecker with a second hand, unrefurbished at 1300$ which sounds just a tad unreasonable, especially since an Ashcroft stage 2 costs about 3300$ plus shipping and tax.
Can you give pointers as to something better? He's in canberra, but goes frequently to Melbourne, I know A & B Automatics are pretty good.
Is there anything else worth doing at the time, I think at least the propshafts whilst we're at it. He's enthusiastic but mechanically disinclined.

Ashcroft stage 2 4HP24 is 1700- pounds. Freight is about 260- TO THE AIRPORT.

It's about another 2-300 for clearance charges etc plus GST, and GST depends on how low you can get away with valuing the invoice. Mine was shipped without invoice, so DHL ask for one on arrival and customs never see it (hint hint).

Also British Motor imports have a couple of 24's in stock second hand, for $2300- or a rebuilt unit from them is $3500- but doesn't include TC. A rebuilt unit from the guy doing the R&R on mine is $4700- just for a std rebuild, plus extras.
