    ERG cooler removal TD5

Last weekend I removed the EGR valve and associated pipework from the cooler and exhaust manifold... amazing how much crud lives in the inlet manifold... I'm thinking I should remove the manifold and clean it out.... But that can wait for another day... I am planning a coolant change and think it would be a good time to remove the EGR cooler and pipework completely. Does anyone know what the pipe sizes are for the coolant tubes that go into the coolant tank and the oil cooler ? Rave has these hoses listed as number 36 and 7 on the coolant flow page. I would like to purchase some plugs or caps before starting removal of the EGR cooler.

There are places out there that sell the kit for the removal of the EGR valve. Td5 alive rings a bell. There will be someone here that can give you the link as they provided it for me too

Oh ok I misunderstood. I just removed the cooler myself and bought another 2 blanking plates off eBay and attached them either side of where the cooler used to be.

    EGR removal

    Trevor
if you have blanked off the water lines from the EGR cooler then you have also blanked off the coolant flow to the Turbo,I commenced doing this on the weekend and stopped until the proper kit arrives from England this week,we were doing the whole engine loom, manifold clean out job so lucky we found out before running for a long period.
the hoses hook up to a steel pipe running around the back of the head to the turbo only visible from underneath or if you take off the upper heat sheild.
the small pipe from the cooler goes to the header tank, the large one connects to the pipe from the turbo
Be wary and be saving money.
    cheers

Would you be able to provide the link to the one you bought? I will have to see exactly what I have done but the cars been fine ever since I did it; well in regards to the turbo (touch wood).

Wait. I'm pretty sure I just blocked off the 2 pipes either side of the cooler. Not removed it. Will double check when I get my car back.

The standard EGR removal kit provides the components to remove the EGR valve and blank off the exhaust outlet/inlet to the EGR valve..... the cooler manifold still fitted to the front of the engine head has coolant pipes running from the coolant overflow tank and the oil cooler on the LHS of the engine. I have searched this site and other members have removed the coolant pipes running to the EGR cooler with no problems encountered. I would like to know if anyone has recorded the diameters of the coolant tubes that run from the EGR cooler back to the tank and the oil cooler so I can purchase blanking caps.

Spray plenty WD40 on the bolts near the discharge manifold as my hex tool broke apart. Check www.discovery2.co.uk have a very good photo and tips regarding EGR removed.

    Bypass it

Pipe sizes from memory are top 10mmID bottom 13mm

    BUT

I bypassed EGR cooler on my 15p by running 5/8 heater hose from oil cooler outlet round back of engine (deleting steel pipe) and fitted a reducer 14mm/10mm a couple of inches below expansion tank to fit return fitting on tank.

That cuts out possable leaks at steel pipe and removes about a meter of pipes and connections.
Heater hose easier to source than standard reducers and LR specific clutter

I have seen some oil cooler outlets blanked but I prefer my solution should give better flow better cooling.

    Pete
