I have had the 697s for about 5K and I am very happy.
Road, sand (Double Is point), creek crossings (Condamine River Rd, 14 crossings) and mud (Duck Ck Rd track to O'Riellys) have not presented any problems so far.
Noise levels are reasonable and handling across all areas have been impressive.
I would definitely recommend :)

The noise is one thing that worries me about them. I can hear the very obvious increase in noise level from a single d697 that is on the car at the moment. I'm really hesitant about pulling the trigger on a set for this reason. The Latitudes are very quite so perhaps I've been spoilt. I'm thinking Pirelli Scorpion ATR or the Conti Cross Contacts might be a better choice....Quote:

With regard to the Pirelie ATR, that is what I have on now in 235/70-16 and I am quite pleased with them so far (8000k) very sure footed in sand and gravel, quiet enough that you dont need the stereo up. They do not seem to be chipping at all and some of the dirt sections here are very rocky now, The only thing is Im not sure how well they wear, 8k is not far enough to determine a trend.

Looks like the 235/70r16 D697 are the go. Paid $328 in Tibooburra to get one fitted so that has tipped the decision as don't especially want to either trade it in or have an odd size/make. I'd have to go to 245/70R16 or 245/75R16 in other makes to get the LT construction.
Did a bit of a shop around and have been quoted $215 by KTAS and $220 by Bridgestone. KTAS want me to front up and give them a deposit before they'll order them in, Bridgestone have them on the shelf. I'd be happy to pay a $20 premium per tyre not to give Kmart my money, so getting to save the hassle of paying them two visits and not give them my business for only $5 a tyre is a bargain. :)

Looks like you've gone with the D697, but for what it's worth...
I've had the Scorpion ATR on for probably close to 40k now and I'm very impressed.
They've been wearing well, I'll more than likely get double what I've got now out of them.
I've never noticed them being noisy at all, but then again...collapsed engine mounts and all :angel:
They've done well offroad, they're certainly no MT but they can hold their own, was very impressed with them in sand.
Also very tough, as I'm pretty lax about airing down and stuff and they've not chipped or got any punctures or anything like that.

I bought a new set of D697s for the P38 yesterday. 245/70/16 on 8"rims (usual is 255/65/16) $239 all up each fitted/balanced/environmental levy for old tyres included. Invoice base price was $225 ea.
According to the Bridgestone bloke, the D697 is an 8 ply LT construction with an A/T tread... was confused 'til he explained this:eek:
